TRES TEW: Hi, I'm Tres Tew. I'm an instructor here at Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts. I'm going
to be teaching you about how to use open hands to defend yourself against the knife and this'll
be on behalf of Expert Village. Now I have several items on my person and right around
me. They can be used as shield if it ever comes to a knife attack. The first one, rolled-up
newspaper is great. Let's kind of roll it up and you can use that to kind of swat at
knives, swat at faces, it's a great shield, also can be used if someone stabs you kind
of throw into their face whatever. Also, we've got the hat. This can be used. You simply
cup you hand into the hat and turn it over like this with the bill as you can see this
protects the inside of my hand and with this I can kind of catch a blade with that and
that very effective, if you're hand-eye coordination is pretty good, otherwise you don't want to
use this. But probably second effective, you got a jacket all you got to do take and wrap
this around your arms very quickly and you can use this with your forearm to block. It's
not going to cut all the way through. In the medieval ages a lot of their armor were just
padded cloth and that pretty much that's what this is. I'm just kind of using it to shove
the knife attack out of the way and counter. Always if you're using a shield you want to
follow up with something fast because you don't want to keep having to use that shield
because, again, it's not a real shield. It's improvisational and you're just using whatever
you can to keep yourself from getting cut. Also, we have the chair. The bottom and the
back side of the chair can be used very effectively. Someone comes at you with a knife and you
just stick it up and they may end up stabbing all the way through it and at that point you
just turn it and then you've got their knife to take out and go after them. Also the points
of the chair can be used to kind of ward them off and the back end of the chair can be used
to butt several different things. But again a chair is a very effective shield. You want
to keep your body close or excuse me, not too close enough where the knife is there's
a gap so where a knife can puncture through but not too close and if you can you want
to stick it out to meet the knife. So that's a couple of improvisational shields that you
can use to defend yourself against the knife.
