One of the main theories in psychology and conflict resolution is called Game Theory.
Game theory is founded on the concept that when people enter into a conflict process
they are trying to accomplish some type of a payoff.
When two people walk away from conflict, they both want to feel fulfilled that they have
gained that payoff.
What may be a payoff for me may not be a payoff for you.
A good negotiation process will enable both parties to discuss their intentions and what
payoff will make them happy.
Looking at Game Theory, there are two popular scenarios for payoffs.
One scenario is looking at two competitive games.
This is a scenario where there are two parties and once resource.
Both parties are fighting to reserve their right for the same resource.
Looking at Hunger Games, each of those competitors or contenders, were fighting for the same
purpose, which was to become the winner.
In that scenario, a win for me is a lose for you.
The other type of game theory outcome is cooperative.
In this scenario, both parties could come out winners.
Negotiation means that when both parties enter the process, they are expecting to both come
out winners.
They aren't really competing, they are looking to cooperate and walk away feeling satisfied.
