i'm gonna come back to kaam right now i can who has just a day storied
reparative reputation
and indeed in the world of education and job
sean n andrea we're talking about the great needs
our schools are now educational system to embrace the idea of or
you as perhaps the pre near
educator in the district right now she's a humble
hobbled lady but i'm telling you he's the best in the business we've watched
up close and personal
her work
for many many years and she's impact of the lies
of many many children
begin once you are false
when you know their comments about the great need for arts in the school system
uh... i definitely agree
uh... and i say that because all of our children are born with gets
every single one of them in one week
stick on this topic of the achievement gap
and um... test scores
week alienate those that
have the special gifts with art
and many times they can express
their understanding of content
and have certain skills when they're allowed to incorporate that arts uh...
in their learning and sell it includes all children when u uh... bring parts
into the school
uh... we talk about an education differentiated instruction
and in many ways that we can instruct our students so that all students are
learning but there's also depreciated assessments
which means weakened state children are allowed to show what they have learned
and what they know
through different means
like art
uh... i have students right now working on uh... national history day
competition
and so many of them chose to do the documentary
and um... that the competition is not until june
uh... but i'd give them a due date of february twenty eight
it was last week there were twenty factor something like that
and uh... just so that we can work on and do the edits and you know that
and they brought them an and i was just into here's
because they spent greatest twelve-year-old
and literally these documentaries look like kid
and you're left with that
i mean i mean they were phenomenal and i make a wide range of different topics
uh... but they're allowed to bring their artistic abilities into the classroom
uh... we have so many different projects that i am a students to uh...
to choose from that the other piece that choice is so important
and so i was very important we have musical geniuses they learned through
music i have a nine-year-old daughter
and at some a students all the time island early on when before she was one
this season musical genius she learned
you know palace defining exterior everything to music
and i saw that this interesting
and reading about it is one thing that actually seeing in front of you have an
other
so there's so many different ways of personal articles have learning styles
uh... that incorporate arts and it's just
itsme we have to have it
we have to you'll armories you are u
copters formal about school
uh... where you teach
just one moment about that and then tell us about your incredible journey to
south africa
uh... i'd teach it how university public charter middle school of mathematics and
science
it's on the campus of howard university uh... in the old human ecology building
across from founders library
uh... we'd been in existence since two thousand five
uh... it's a charter public charter schools though we do not select our
students
uh... our students come from all over
washington d_c_
and uh...
and they score off the chart
and that happy
and their loved
and we go above and beyond for them and uh...
it's a it's a matter of fact insist and school uh...
by as he's history use a champagne okay
anti uh... stand stands for science technology engineering and mathematics
uh... we have been abundance of technology in our in our building
um... and we have a phenomenal math and science program
uh... honors programs uh... xo
let me let me uh... let me challenge here because you know we look at the
news
mhm and we read the newspapers
there's not any
like that that's not what inner-city ski keats aren't the only going to school
light vet science and technology
that's not really happened is that
well now it is clearly whitley adam at with
and i mean i dont be deceased was on and i'm just talking about you know
typically in stereotypically when powell
in the city kids
portrayed in the media
right and what you're talking about here is an absolute defiance of definitely
definitely and i found out on the doctor hassan minor
and he dismiss his vision he went to m_i_t_ and he said he wanted
uh... a program in it
washington d_c_
and have said this is a model for other inner city uh... populations around the
country
he wanted to expose our students to mathematics science technology
engineering
uh... and he do whatever he could to bring this school
to washington d_c_ and and and we serve all of the students in d_c_ we do not
selected students
um... but since then said we open up in two thousand five and and we wear
uh... i would say the innovators and in that
uh... initiative
uh... but since then there are other schools uh... that have i think there is
a high school
caught math and science can forming
uh... but there are other schools that and and other programs
that may not be specific to stem programs uh... other schools are now in
incorporating it's been a mandate of the obama administration as well and half of
the bill bomb industries which is kyung get him as a regular business is down at
the white house these days
here's where he is now one of the tightest get
colette
andrea install
would kill the students
from viewing your
the film that you want the house
acting verse they can relate innocently his kato have a lot of films were
a fifteen-year-old
kid looks to me directly inland tells you how they feel if you know that you
know this is not
a slice the population you hear agreed deal about you know and um...
but it is to go through hardships that we know that that she has i think that
they would get a great deal out of
watching someone that they can relate to
just tell it like it is but what she's been through and then hiking inspired by
the choices that she's making
okay we're we con all our films are about kids like
to your kids around my age and they all just
kids though never have a voice like they're always like experts talking
about kids and so
rootkit we found i mean i'm always surprised that kids like watching a
film's because like dirt documentaries and i think while maybe they're not
action packed them up front but kids like me
love watching other kids talk they love hearing one another cast to say in that
akitas on that screen where we film they're looking right in the land so
it's like their story no one else is telling
camera i've followed your career
largely
through through through face book and have been so fascinated about your your
sore journ to south africa and the revelations that that you have shared
of with your time in south africa
what took you there what was your mission and what has been the impact
okay out my actually i'm
it's the universe conspiring in my favor i believe that completely because
i did not plan to go the south africa actually met
um... the chair of fundraising for school in south africa
um... he was told that he needed to speak to me
they have a math and science school in south africa
enact that
okhane young history teacher that okay
and i said i spoke with him for three hours and um... doctor great cars office
howard and universities campaigns
and um... he began to tell me about their school
in south africa
it's called leaps science and math school uh...
and he was telling me about a program a class that the students take everyday
call life orientation
and
it was a class that
allow the students to
share their place
in power themselves in a country just at that time seventeen years out of town
apartheid being in that but still not having a voice
i'm still being all pressed to this day
and so this class allows them to uh...
pursuing encourages them first thing is that encouragement to speak
um... but then after that it's something that they are buying into
um... they share their experiences they hold each other accountable
and in that regard transfers into
classes
and um... so i'm writing down about this program and he stopped me and he said
come to my school
come to my school and i think
okay and then
i didn't really believe mom but that nine have a ticket for you
you're coming can you take off two months unlike national repeated
and
i went over there and so for two summers i've spent uh... my two months off
teaching in south africa at the schools they have in cape town
johannesburg limpopo
uh... man pretoria
and they service students and from the townships
um...
tcu experience
unbelievable
poverty
that i i was gonna ask you if you did visit the so wait a while you were there
yeah i was insulates old in shin ninety three nineteen ninety-three in and i
went back into
styles and and five from and steel there were for s
that didn't have floors there was no such thing as
electricity running through those places for running water how was it
so the different parts of soweto you know their parts where they're are uh...
houses with you know running one of them and then there's still the township
areas where
under shanty houses thailand
uh... so it's it's definitely uh...
it just depends if the waco but then if you have lanka and
and in cape town
shanty houses
uh... and people here
have no i'd indium
all the frame of reference when you use the word poverty
explain
poverty south africa
and what folks don't understand
here when they say poverty
after leaving you know i homeless
population does understand here in america
does understand
that type of poverty
uh... in
way they have homes and their shanti homes
there is no running water
there's no electricity
there is no uh... flooring
uh...
to share bathrooms end the talent ship
uh...
outside of their homes
um...
is just what lanai gold beyond al borders oftentimes if you like
ikkada everybody could just travel more than understand how blessed we really
are
and that but they know how blessed they honor
they do
they know how blessed me out
and faded out that the crack a dime
to make it to the bus stop on time
because the bus driver will not stop if you're late
but you will he will be held accountable
and if you don't like it
they who runs a school they'll watch for
however far away it is
that next day they'll be there
we had to do homestay so i i i stayed with
uh... many of the students
uh... of the school
and there were times you know my american weights will come out and
that's
please stop to bust he's coming his coming
he will end
he will be here tomorrow on time annexed ***
they would be the condon jump thank you so much for coming in studio
