OK, this is January 2013 and in this video we're using web analytics to look at the popularity
of Alex Jones' Infowars.
(Jones) I'm not going to sit down and shut up!
Jens is arguably the nation's premier purveyor of paranoia ***......Out of his studios in
Austin, Texas, his radio show and webcast reach an estimated 1 million people a day....(Jones
shouting)....and on Youtube and elsewhere, Jones estimates 200 million people have seen
his various documentaries.
Jones is a contentious topic. There does seem to be evidence that he is controlled opposition.
(Videos showing AJ shouting at a rally organiser then making out that children were being brought
to shake his hand at the same rally when really the organisers are shouting at Jones, angry
that he has take over their rally.)
But there's no doubt he's a brilliant and committed individual who has done wonders
in terms of waking up the world.
(Video of Jones stating in an interview that he absolutely believes everything he says
on air - it's the truth.)
Infowars has been in the news in January 2013 - here is a screen dump showing Infowars appearing
on 15 January in the Alexa hot list of topics most popular pages on the web. That means
it's very current.
So we're going over to start where we must always start when analysing a site - on the
site itself. If we go to Infowars, then Advertise, we get the advertising pack. The pack tells
us that the site gets over 3 millon absolute unique visitors per month. That basically
means individuals.
Now, this is an advertising pack and we know that Infowars, like all other businesses,
will probably be using their optimum figures. So we need to check out how reliable they
are. So we're going over to Quantcast here to check out how many unique visitors Infowars
gets.....And yes, it is nearly 1.5 m people in the US per month. In fact, at this point
in October 2012 we can see nearly 3m per month. And we know that Quantcast only measures US
visitors and that Infowars has visitors from other countries - a lot, in fact. So we know
we can trust this Media Pack.
Noew this is interesting. We know Ifowars has over 3m visitors a month. But Google Adplanner,
which is supposed to give us the estimated monthly unique visitor count, it only estimates
260 000 for Infowars. This may be down to bad feeling between Google and Infowars. We
can't know but there is a big difference between 260K and 3M+ And it shows that when using
web analytics you must use multiple sources for accuracy - you can't rely on one.
Google Trends is more reliable - here we can see the rise in search volume for Infowars
over the years. That's a serious rise and Jones is spreading round the world. These
are the people who have searched for the Infowars keyword, of course. As usual, these are probably
newcomers to Infowars as regulars don't need to use those search terms. And look at all
these countries. So Alex Jones is spreading.
And Adwords suggests that this is at a search rate of around a total of 600 000 per month.
Newcomers per month - that's not bad.
Back to the Infowars media kit, which talks about Infowars' Alexa ranking and compares
it with other providers. This is all true. We can see here in Alexa the ranking - which
is actually better at the moment than it says in the Infowars media kit. And down here is
the traffic graph showing an increase. We can also see that Infowars features in the
top 1000 most popular websites for these countries - and that's fantastic.
Just to put things in proportion, that Alexa ranking is around the same as William Hill's.
And Ryan Air's and Vistaprint.
Having a look here at the other sites Infowars surfers visit. Many are excellent news sources.
So whatever you think of a website, trust the surfers to make up their own minds.
Back to the Infowars media kit again and a look at the demographics. It's about 60/40
male female - educated, high income older males like Infowars.
Of course, Infowars isn't just Alex Jones, it's a huge team of other excellent professional
journalists and support people. So thank you Infowars.
