We decided to take a closer look at the development of a new very interesting upcoming czech game.
These scenes might give you an idea of what it is.
Yes, it is indeed Arma 3.
This is the first part of our series of reportages.
So what are the developpers working on?
In contrast to Arma 2, we are heavily improving the physics...
...concentrating more on the game controls and UI...
...we will offer a much bigger terrain which is based on a real island...
...and basically improve every aspect of the game.
Currently we are working on modelling and populating the whole map which is really huge.
We take care of more than 400 square km pure landmass and..
... of course we won't stop at the sea and seabed, because in Arma 3 the player will be able to dive and conduct undersea missions.
The campaign and other playable content will take place on the island called Limnos which exists in real life and is situated in the Aegan sea.
The story is set in the near future where Eastern armies try to invade the West and attack Europe.
NATO is trying to fight back but sadly they are not too successfull, so the player will find himself on this island deep behind enemy lines...
...where it is suspected to find a heavily classified war secret which might help the BLUFOR to turn tables and win the war.
Reporter: You have mentioned that the Island Limnos is real. How do you build such sophisticated virtual worlds from real-life data?
Did you send some artists over there or how do you do that?
Ivan: Yes indeed. The most important thing is to have precise geographic data. We used GIS-systems to measure the island,
then we start with making a digital modell of the game.
We also purchased high resolution satellite photos to work with, as we already did in earlier developments.
This time it was not some Bohemian Uplands, so we could not all go there. Nevertheless, we sent a team of designers there to go to the island, collect data etc after Marek Spanel visited it.
During their visit, the took photos, videos, travelled through villages and came back with literally hundreds of gigabytes of data.
We looked at all of it to get a good impression of the island and evaluated certain spects we had in mind.
At the beginning you were talking about underwater scenarios. Could you maybe explain that a little bit further?
Well the idea originates from the question how one could add fresh and new aspects to the Arma warfare.
We went back to the older idea of Special Forces, combat swimmers, SEALs etc...
It would give the player more freedom.
And now we are thinking about how to implement underwater combat,
which means things like harpoons and how the AI can operate with it
I think this would please a lot of players.
Reporter: What are you currently concentrating on?
It is a lot of things...
... for example submarines, being a part of the underwater combat.
They will propably not be fully operationable
but there will be smaller Swimmer Delievery Vehicles fully controllable by the player
Something like a "underwater motorcycle"
It is equipped with a strong periscope and holds tubes for 4 divers and helps them with underwater movement.
One of our designers is currently exclusively working on the ambient life...
.... despite the civilian population might be sparse on the island...
... it can play an very important role throughout the story.
Is there something specific you personally would like to point out being a matter of the heart of Arma 3?
It's a lot of things but because I started as a environmental designer, mapmaker....
...I dedicate my time to how the map is crafted....
... and what our designers are projecting.
A thing that I like and what I missed from Flashpoint and which is also what we step by step have been improving during development of Arma 2 and OA is artillery support...
..which we expanded further in Arma 3.
We want to offer a wider variety of artillery support and definitely will expand this aspect in Arma 3.
So now you can do more than just point somewhere with you binoculars.
Now you can use multiple types of ammunition such as flares, smoke shells...
or, since we are in a slightly futuristic setting, also intelligent ammunition. Laser-guided shells etc
Thanks for watching! :)
