Restoring fire to a landscape like this when it’s been absent for almost a century is pretty tricky.
We started out small.
In 1983 we did a small prescribed fire on the side of the Two jack canal.
It was 7 hectares, we had 30 people on site, 10 trucks and it took us three weeks.
Compare that to what happened in 2003
– we burned that same 7 hectare space in an afternoon with a handful of people and one small truck.
We’ve learned a lot in that time.
2003 was also the year that we lit one of the biggest prescribed fires in the Bow Valley
the Fairholme prescribed fire
You can see evidence of that fire right here.
It burned from here, almost all the way to Canmore..20km along the TransCanada highway.
Since the Fairholme burn, we’ve continued our prescribed fire program and had lots of success.
