My name is Gisele.
I live in Rio de Janeiro.
I am Carioca, born here in Rio de Janeiro.
All my education is connected to the visual arts.
I graduated from the School of Fine Arts of UFRJ, which is a federal university of Rio de Janeiro.
I studied philosophy for four years with Professor Claudio Ulpiano, an amazing professor.
I worked as an assistant for many years of a Carioca artist, Beth Jobim.
All my life was dedicated to painting, basically.
I have worked with other mediums, photography and video, which I like, and even exhibited.
But I have a strong connection with the landscape, and have been working with it all my life.
Since the university, I realized that what I was mostly interested in was landscape.
Photography supplied this somewhat.
But I think I can find questions in my work through painting,
because I think what we see today in relation to the landscape
is related to the history of landscape in painting,
a constructed gaze of this.
And the work I am showing in Ohio
is part of a series, which should go on for a few years until it is finished.
It goes from A to Z, and is called Capsules.
I will show Capsule B and Capsule C.
They are works in progress.
We are now in October, and Capsule C is not finished, but Capsule B is finished.
And it is a long series, it might take ten years for it to be finished,
because it intends to deal much with this issue of the landscape in painting.
It has a real intention.
So I start with the form, which is a bit Mondrian, and so on,
and each of its parts, since it is made in parts, intends to deal with a historical moment in painting.
At the same time I want a clean work.
I don't want it to be confusing with thousands of super-positions.
And I think for me to develop this work, and to make it mature,
that each Capsule gets to have its own importance,
I think I should give myself this long term, something like a lifetime.
In parallel, I make other works, but I usually work in a series,
and this was the longest series I had decided to do.
The work is slow. Each work takes about nine months to be concluded.
It becomes part of an experience about the landscape,
about something that affects me in the landscape,
when I am walking or when I am seeing it.
I feel that desire, and I make several drawings until I get that part to fit.
So it is a work that wants to understand this contemporary landscape,
from our memory and from the memory of what was the history of the landscape in painting.
I think in Brazil—my work doesn't have anything super Brazilian about it,
in the way that people imagine it, with many colors.
On the contrary.
But I think it has much to do with the construction of the city.
As I live in Rio de Janeiro, I think that Rio is a city that you can connect nature with architecture,
and your sight it taken by this at all times.
It is very rich. Spaciality is very rich.
I think my work has everything to do with this sight of what is Rio,
And what is the Carioca.
That's it. I am going to show you a little bit about my studio, the mess that it is.

So these works will go to Ohio,
