The ocean, being in saltwater, has been a part of my life since I was a little kid,
and, I can't imagine ever being anywhere that I haven't lived that was not near the ocean.
There's a whole different element of being in the saltwater that always excites me and
always drives me to be out there.
I've seen so many amazing things while out on my kayak that, again had nothing to do
with the kayak fishing, just being out on the ocean, and that's why I love it so much.
I mean, I love being in any kind of water, but the salt is my home.
In kayak fishing there really is this 'stop and smell the roses' kind of aspect, because
you have no choice, you're not getting anywhere very fast, so you're just cruising around
and enjoying the scenery and everything else that's involved waiting for the fish to hit.
Quite often I will hear fish before ever see them. You know, you'll hear some splashing
of bait off to the side, you'll hear the hit on your line, which you just don't get from
boat fishing. If you want to get that fish, you've got to dedicate yourself to it, and
that might mean paddling six/eight hours or more and turning around and coming in without
that bite.
People that don't fish, or don't enjoy fishing, don't get that same rush I do out of it. For
me, its every time a fish hits that line, its like an electrical shock going through
that line into my hands. It's you against the fish.
I still get that same rush every single fish. And, it's not something I get from doing anything
else.
I'm Jim Sammons. I'm a kayak angler.
