WELL I AM IN MY 17TH YEAR HERE WITH CINCINNATI
BALLET.
I CAME FROM BEING THE RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER
FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO OPERA BALLET COMPANY, THEY HAD
THEIR OWN BALLET COMPANY INSIDE THE OPERA.
AND BEFORE THAT I WAS PRINCIPLE DANCER WITH SAN
FRANCISCO BALLET AND BEFORE THAT I WAS A PRINCIPLE
DANCER WITH BALLET WEST IN SALT LAKE CITY.
SO I AM THRILLED TO BE HERE AND THE 50TH IS A REALLY BIG
DEAL FOR US.

THIS IS OUR BIG CELEBRATION.
I MEAN FOR US TO TURN 50 I DON'T NEED TO TELL
YOU BECAUSE YOU WERE THERE FOR SOME MANY OF THOSE
VARIOUS EPISODES.

COUNTRY.

CRISIS.

AND YOU KNOW DAVID LYMAN, JUST A VERY PASSIONATE
AND EXCELLENT INFORMED REALLY DANCE HISTORIAN
BUT A WONDERFUL WRITER HAS PUT THIS TOGETHER AND HAS
WRITTEN THIS STORY.
AND WE TALKED ABOUT SHOULD WE JUST MAKE IT ROSY
BECAUSE WE'RE CELEBRATING?

ON STAGE AND WE KIND OF DO
A PHENOMENAL JOB, BUT WE ALSO HAVE AN AMAZING
ACADEMY AS YOU KNOW, YOUR LOVELY GRANDDAUGHTER IS
A PART OF IT ALL.
AND WE HAVE ALMOST 1400 STUDENTS, YOUNG STUDENTS
AND ALSO ADULT STUDENTS THAT INCLUDE OUR RHYTHM
AND MOTION.
AND ANOTHER THING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW IS WE HAVE
A VERY EXTENSIVE EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAM.
WE IMPACT 14 THOUSAND LIVES BETWEEN OUR CINCY DANCE
PROGRAM WHICH IS INNER CITY SCHOOLS, TITLE ONE SUPPORTED
SCHOOLS, THERE ARE ABOUT A THOUSAND OF THOSE
STUDENTS.
AND WE ALSO HAVE OUR IN STEP PROGRAMS THAT WE DO.
WE HAVE OUR STUDENT MATINEES SO WE'RE VERY INVOLVED
IN THE COMMUNITY.

TRIED TO GIVE IT THE INTEGRITY THAT WAS

MET COLUMBUS, WE WILL HAVE 24 SWANS.

I THINK THE LITTLE SORT OF WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE

BUT FOR THAT FINAL FULLY PROFESSIONAL AND REALIZED
SORT OF ESSENCE OF ABSOLUTE TOGETHERNESS AND ABSOLUTE
HIGH LEVEL OF TECHNIQUE, IT'S GOING TO BE STUNNING.

I KNOW PEOPLE WHO REALLY THINK THEY DON'T LIKE
CLASSICAL BALLET BUT I WONDER HOW MANY
THEY'VE ACTUALLY SEEN.

I MEAN IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT COMES AT YOU LIKE
THIS.
IT'S SOMETHING THAT KIND OF SINGS IN AND IT HAS

THE REPUTATION OF BALLET IS THAT IT'S A LITTLE, YOU KNOW
ESOTERIC, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
AND HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FEEL ABOUT THIS?
AM I SUPPOSED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING WHEN
THEY DO AN ARABESQUE?
AND IT'S NOT ANY OF THAT, YOU KNOW.
I MEAN IT'S REALLY -- IT'S AN ART FORM THAT HAS SO MANY
WAYS OF TALKING ABOUT THE HUMAN CONDITION
OR TALKING ABOUT HUMOR OR TALKING ABOUT AMAZING
TECHNIQUE OR TALKING ABOUT JUST SHEER BEAUTIFUL
GRACE.

EXPERIENCE I THINK BECAUSE THESE YOUNG PEOPLE
ARE LOOKING AT THAT STAGE AND THEY FEEL THAT THAT
STAGE IS FULL OF, YOU KNOW, YOUNG PEOPLE THEIR OWN AGE.

AND IT IS BRAND NEW FROM SCRATCH, ABSOLUTELY
EVERYTHING FIRST TIME.
BRAND NEW SETS, BRAND NEW COSTUMES, BRAND NEW MUSICAL
COMPOSITION, BRAND NEW LIBRETTO.
WE'VE ENGAGED YOU KNOW A FABULOUS PUPPETEER WHO IS
WORKING WITH US.
WE HAVE MR. MAGIC, JOHN OWENS, WHO HAVE
COME IN AND WE HAVE A MAGIC SCARF DANCING.
AND IT IS A FASCINATING PIECE.
I JUST GOT THE DIGITALIZED VERSION OF THE MUSIC FOR ACT
ONE LIKE LAST WEEK AND IT IS STUNNING EVEN ON
A COMPUTER.
YOU KNOW, AND WE PICKED A YOUNG MAN, JOHN ESTACIO,
TO COMPOSE THE WORK.
AND I WENT THROUGH A BIG LONG PROCESS ABOUT THAT
COMPOSITION OR WHO THAT COMPOSER SHOULD BE
BECAUSE I WANTED SOMEBODY WHO COULD GIVE US SOMETHING
OF A CONTEMPORARY SOUND BUT REALLY NOT TOO OVERLY
CONTEMPORARY BUT SOMEBODY WHO HAS THE FACILE AND EASY
WAY OF USE OF THE SYMPHONY.
BECAUSE THE CINCINNATI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IS GOING
TO BE PLAYING FOR US, I WANTED THEM TO ALSO FEEL
STIMULATED ABOUT IT.
AND THE MUSIC TELLS THE STORY SO BEAUTIFULLY
AND HE HAS A WAY OF BRINGING PHRASES INTO CRESCENDOS
OR INTO THE FINAL CLIMAX THAT JUST PULLS
AT YOUR HEART.
I AM JUST SO EXCITED ABOUT IT.
AND IT IS THE KIND OF WORK THAT YOU KNOW PEOPLE HAVE
A CERTAIN FAMILIARITY.
I DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL I REALLY STARTED RESEARCHING
IT THAT THERE'S SO MANY DIFFERENT VERSIONS
OF THE LEGEND YOU KNOW OF KING ARTHUR AND CAMELOT
AND HIS KNIGHTS.
AND THEN WHEN WE STARTED LOOKING AT IT WE REALIZED
THAT WE COULD ACTUALLY PRIORITIZE IN THE WAY
WE TELL OUR STORY BY MAKING IT REALLY ALL FOCUSING
ON THOSE STORY TELLING IDEAS THAT COULD INCORPORATE
DANCE.
SO EVERY PART OF IT IS ABOUT MOVEMENT, YOU KNOW
THE RELATIONSHIP WITH GUINEVERE AND KING
ARTHUR AND GUINEVERE AND LANCELOT AND THE POWER
OF THE KNIGHTS AND THEIR ABILITY TO.

ANOTHER ONE THAT WAS VERY CONTEMPORARY INTERPRETATION
FROM THE BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET.
BUT IN THE U.S., AND WE HAVE A H, WE HAVE A LIMITED
NUMBER OF FULL LENGTH BALLETS.
>> KELLAR: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE COSTUMES.
>> THE COSTUMES ARE STUNNING, THEY WERE DESIGNED
BY SANDRA WOODALL WHO I WORKED WITH HER YOU KNOW
35 YEARS AGO WHEN I DANCED WITH SAN
FRANCISCO BALLET FOR TEN YEARS SHE WAS MY -- SHE PUT
THE COSTUMES ON OUR BODIES SO SHE'S A REAL
PROFESSIONAL.
SHE'S NOT ONLY NATIONAL BUT INTERNATIONAL.
AND THERE IS SOMETHING THAT IS CHALLENGING
ABOUT CREATING A COSTUME FOR A DANCER, IT HAS TO MOVE
AND YET IT HAS TO SHOW FORM, IT HAS TO SHOW THE BODY.
IT HAS TO BE WASHABLE BECAUSE YOU CAN IMAGINE.
AND SO IT HAS TO HAVE THAT FLUIDITY AND YET IT HAS
TO BE FORM FITTED.
IT IS A VERY TRICKY COMBINATION OF THINGS.
AND SHE HAS DESIGNED -- I MEAN I TOLD HER I WOULD
KILL TO COME OUT OF RETIREMENT TO WEAR THAT
GUINEVERE COSTUME >> KELLAR: I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT.
>> OH, MY GOD, IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL.
AND SHE'S CREATED THESE WONDERFUL KNIGHTS, THEY HAVE
THIS SORT OF METALLIC WHAT WOULD YOU CALL IT BANDING
THAT GIVES IT -- THAT MAKES IT FLEXIBLE, BUT ALSO GIVES
IT THAT SENSE OF SOME KIND OF ARMOR.
AND SO THE KNIGHTS LOOK REALLY MANLY AND AMAZING.
LANCELOT IS IN THESE BLUE CROSSED COLORS THAT ARE
SENSUOUS AND JUST AS THE CHARACTER IS SUPPOSED
TO BE.
SO -- AND I DON'T -- I DON'T WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY,
BUT MORDRED, THE KIND OF MEAN GUY, THE BAD GUY,
HE HAS THIS KIND OF CLOUD OF LIKE DARKNESS THAT FLOATS
AROUND HIM THAT'S LIKE NOTHING I HAVE EVER SEEN.
SO ANYWAY I'M A LITTLE BIT OUT OF MY HEAD ABOUT IT.

AND THIS IS A WORK THAT I HAVE BEEN DYING TO BRING
TO THIS COMMUNITY WE FINALLY -- IT'S
A DIFFICULT PROCESS GETTING THE RIGHTS FROM
