Suddenly I was alone with my radio, in the middle of swamps, surrounded by ghouls!
During two weeks.
I was just a child, I only remember it was really cold
and there were often quarrels between the survivors.
Now that I think about it, we often eat roasting meat the next day!
We were under cover in this protected residence, and they came like crazy people!
Gniiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Hi ! Quick reminder of the concept! I'll present a book, and its screen adaptation,
to show what each format bring to the story.
Today, like I promise, I'll talk about H2G2!
A few years ago, I hated zombies. Mostly because of '28 weeks later'.
… Really? A zombie resisting to a *** attack?
What the hell ?
Then, I saw 'Zombieland'.
Efficient against little brothers.
And finally The Walking Dead
That's how they got me ...
World War Z is a book written by Max Brooks in 2006.
The narrative is unusual, because we don't follow a group of characters
while they try to survive,
but we discover what happened through personal accounts from survivors of all countries,
collected after the war by a member of the UN.
Some of this survivors played an important part during the war,
and following this stories give us a chronology of the events, worldwide.
These zombies are relatively traditional.
It's really the approach and the presentation that make the originality of this story.
Max Brooks said he was inspired by "The Good War" by Studs Terkel,
an oral history of World War 2.
The author has also done a lot of researches
to try to be close to the reality and probability in case of similar scenario.
Several points are worth noting.
First, there are many independent characters who never met.
Oh, we already seen this one... Right?
Second, we do not care for the characters, we know they survive.
He's surrounded by zombies and the area will be bombed? Pff!
Third, it is very realistic! But I'm not afraid, eh?
Fourth, Max Brooks loves Dr Who enough to name his squad of dogs K9.
In summary: 42 people from diverse backgrounds share their experience during the war against the zombies.
Civil, military, the conclusion is that none of them will invite Zack to dinner.
It's so realistic that I almost wondered
if I have not slept for several years to wake up only after the disaster.
Besides, I also wonder, given the number of witnesses,
if the zombies invasion is not the answer to the question about life, the universe and everything.
You see what I'm talking about H2G2!
The film was released in theaters on June 21.
It was directed by Marc Forster, starring Brad Pitt in the role of hero, Gerry Lane.
While the book is a return on the events, the film takes us to the heart of the action.
The story starts with the beginning of the epidemic.
Gerry, who has made several field missions for the UN, eats pancakes with his family when suddenly ...
ZOMBIES !
So he will try to save the world.
An important element before going further ...
As for The Vampire Diaries, the book and the movie have only in common the name and a few allusions.
The different treatment of zombie is the most significant change.
Instead of being slow, both in terms of walking and activation of the virus,
they are fast, lively, and especially ...
act like chickens.
Yes. This zombies are halfway between the hen and the velociraptor. 1 00:04:07,210 --> 00:04:09,070 The missing link probably.
They bite and cackle.
Another detail : the virus act in 12 seconds.
I thought it was a shame, because it removes any element of surprise due to late transformation.
No but really, you saw the psychopath's head of this hen?
It almost makes me more scared than the zombies!
We never distrust enough the hens.
The book is divided into eight parts.
Warnings,
Blame,
The Great Panic,
Turning the Tide,
Home Front USA,
Around the World, And Above,
Total War
and finally, Good-Byes.
The film is limited to the first 4, knowing that the 'Warnings'
are presented extremely rapidly during the opening credits,
with an ambiance of 'old report' made ??me wonder for a moment if I was in the right room!
Then I saw the name of Brad Pitt.
In the film, the worldwide contamination is lightning, to quickly reach
a world of chaos with many dangers in which the hero is going to evolve.
The purpose of the story is to present a world where men have lost their grip,
and in which he'll try to survive despite everything and if possible to regain control.
But in order to avoid a film of 4h, the massive contamination,
which lasts several weeks to several months in the novel,
takes place here in a few days, or a few hours!
The acceleration of the zombies and their transformation were essential
to follow the observations of the hero and his attempt to understand the phenomenon from the beginning,
in a world largely destroyed.
One of the great strengths of the book is its international treatment of the story
and the many ways of the worldwide infection. Some of them are really brilliant!
We only know major elements of the war :
great battles, the various measures taken by the countries, survival techniques...
And there are many, too many to present all of them in a movie.
The 42 characters are more or less strong and interesting in some ways.
But they don't meet the others, so it was impossible to put them all in a 2 hour movie.
It is therefore logical that the film is attached to one of them!
Well... No.
Instead of exploiting one of the existing characters whose range of nationalities,
styles, roles and interest would be make Stephanie Meyer very jealous ...
The writers have chosen to create completely an American superhero
identical in all aspects with all other American superheroes found in all American movies.
But that's not all!
They also removed the neutral and diverse side of the book, based on extensive research
and showing the situation in many countries,
showing that each has its technical more or less effective in the fight against the disaster...
Well, ok, maybe I become a little enraged.
But I felt betrayed by the part in Jerusalem.
I can't develop without spoiler, but those who
have read the book and seen the movie will, I think, understand what I mean.
I am a little sad that they have made ??this story something pro-American
cutting elements more consistent and attractive for the scenario.
We know that Americans save the world.
A little change would have been nice.
Well, I groan, as always.
The film is really not bad, though cliché on several points,
the most damaging being the desire to show that Americans are better than everyone.
However, it is very interesting by others, including the weakness of zombies,
a point absolutely not addressed in the book, but the idea is excellent.
A good film, then, but a bad adaptation.
Max Brooks has not been integrated into the creative process
and did not want to join it later,
so I can't say that the film brings more to the universe.
It's coherent, the approach of the problem and its solution are interesting,
but it has nothing to do with the original work.
So, if you want to experience a different approach of zombies, go see the movie.
This is a good moment.
But don't try to find the atmosphere of the novel.
Similarly, if you've seen the movie and are intrigued by the novel,
don't read it to find that good old Gerry!
However, you may be attracted by the richer
and more developed world of Max Brooks,
and by the various characters he staged!
There's something for everyone!
Well, this video is now complete!
You will find in the description below
links for interviews of Max Brooks
or the movie trailer, if you want more!
Feel free to give me your opinion on the book or the movie, or both!
I'll see you later, good bye!
