It will soon be six weeks since this expedition started,
six weeks of deep diving with the Blancpain X Fathoms.
It’s a real pleasure to keep track of the time on a watch like this.
Underwater, the time is counted in minutes.
At great depths, each minute costs a fortune in the energy being used,
And will result in hours of decompression stops.
Time has a very particular value for deep divers.
On the X Fathoms, there is a five-minute countdown.
When I come back up,
my decompression stops are, of course, much longer than 5 minutes,
but this countdown regularly gives me...
some short timeslots that are very convenient,
particularly when I stop…
to photograph little sea creatures.
I have to stick to a particular speed of ascent...
for each of these decompression stops.
With this countdown, I give myself 5-minute breaks...
whenever I come across one of these planktonic creatures.
Lastly, reading the depth on your watch in an analogue display...
is really enjoyable precisely because it visually displays...
the ascent or descent speed as the hands turn,
which you can’t get with an electronic depth meter.
Such precious dives where each minute is so important…
deserve to be measured with a beautiful instrument…
And the X Fathoms is genuinely a superb diving watch.
