Welcome to "Using RefWorks with PubMed" This tutorial will help you use RefWorks to
import citations from PubMed and
create a bibliography. PubMed is a service at the National Library of
Medicine
that includes citations from medicine and other life science journals.
PubMed can be found in a library homepage and the database search type
under health and medicine. Then you will select PubMed from the list of databases.
Conduct a search by entering a term into the search bar then click "Search"
After you have conducted a search in PubMed mark the records you wish to save by
checking them off. Click on "Send" to the top-right of the page.
Under choose destination select "File" From the format drop-down menu
select MEDLINE then click on "Create File." In the File Download window click "Save" If the
security notice appears at the top of the screen,
click the option to download file. The purpose now is to save the citations by
downloading them.
In the "Save As" box select the drive or folder that you want your file to be saved in
and then click "Save" You can also rename the file. When the download is complete
a window will appear, click "Close" Now log into RefWorks using your username and
password.
RefWorks can be found on the library homepage. If you are a first time user, you
need to create an account using a Quinnipiac email address. RefWorks is a
web based management tool
that allows users to create references in APA, MLA, and other formats from online
databases and websites.
If you need to create a new folder, select "New Folder" and give it a name
relevant to your research.
Next, you will import your saved citations file into RefWorks.
To do this mouse over reference and select "Import"
From the drop down menu scroll down and select NLM
PubMed as the import filter. For the database
select PubMed. Locate the citation file you downloaded from PubMed
and saved on your computer. Import the references into the folder you wish the
references to reside in. Finally click "Import"
at the bottom of the box. Once the citations are successfully imported into
RefWorks,
click on "View Last Imported Folder" In the last imported folder you can view
references and organize what folder you would like them to reside in.
To create the bibliography of your list of references click on
the create bibliography button. Click on output style and select a format. Choose
"Word for Windows" as the file type. Under references to include select the folder
you have just created. Click on "Create Bibliography" Once the bibliography is complete
you may download it or email it using your Quinnipiac email address.
This is what your bibliography document should look like. Be sure to save this
document to your computer.
