I'm Monique Evans with today's health news. Obesity is on the rise worldwide. That's a
problem on both the personal and government levels. A new analysis indicated that increasing
access to cheap food, especially highly processed carbohydrates, is the primary culprit. Although
many people don't have enough to eat, many others are eating too much of the wrong things.
Dr. Ezzati and colleagues analyzed data from multiple surveys from all over the world.
The study included 19 million adults and data from 1975 to 2014. Populations in parts of
Africa and South Asia may still have low body weight, but for the rest of the world, increasing
obesity is a much bigger health problem. In the US, for example, four million adults were
obese in 1975. In 2014, 39 million adults were obese. The health implications of increased
obesity include increased rates of diabetes and heart disease. For dailyRx, I'm Monique
Evans.
