hi my name is Karl O'Keeffe I work with Enable Ireland's Assistive Technology
training service
and in this video i'll show you how easy it is to do
subtitles for a video using Google and YouTube's fantastic speech
recognition system
now i know it gets a bit of stick but this really is a...
makes making subtitles a lot easier so
so you've uoloaded your video
if you go to your video manager
and then you select the video that you want to work on with the dropdown
beside edit
and select captions
in europe here we call them subtitles but
captions and subtitles are the same thing
so what we want to do here is uh...
we want to add captions
no we don't
we want to click on automatic captions
and here we see how
is has done just using speech recognition
and what it makes on my
irish accent
so i'll just play a little bit of this
okay this is just a quick demo to show you how easy it is to install use the camera
theremine
so hopefully this is the page your on
and if you click on the link here
OK as we can see it's done a pretty good job for but em...
it's made a couple mistakes so what we can do now is that we can uh...
download this file
there few different formats here and I'll just go with an .srt file
that's downloading to my computer i'll open this up now
in notepad hopfully
select notepad
any plain text editor.. if using a mac em.. I'm not sure what your text editor is
but
uh... a plain text editor is what you want
so.. where is this
and select notepad
okay so here we go
so I'm just goibg to edit this and correct any mistakes
and get right back to you.. so its
five forty six in the evening
let's see long this takes
okay so
ten minutes later
and there were quite a lot of mistakes i probably should have gone to those
elocution lessons
when i was a kid but em.. it was pretty quick it's a 2 minute long video
ten munites is an acceptable amount of time i think
to spend subtitling it. so i'm gonna
save it as
captions
and
it was a
.srt file
just gonna put it on the desktop
for convenience
I'll leave that open just in case things go a little awry
okay so now
i'll just go back to page here
and now I'm going to add captions
and upload timed caption file
and here on my desktop it sees my captions.. open that
caption track created successfully
so let's see
okay this is just a quick demo just show you how easy it is to install and use the camera
theremin
so hopefully this is the page you're on and if you click on the link here
the file should start comming down and it's about 4.8 MB so it shouldn't take long
OK great, that said something about South Korea last time
there you go... thanks a lot
