"Angeloshek" "The Little Angel" After a story by L Andreyev
At times Sashka wished to give up what is called
living.
to go no more to the grammar school
and there to have to listen to everyone scolding him
no more to experience the pain in the small of his back and indeed over his whole body
when his mother made him kneel in the corner all the evening.
But, since he was only thirteen years of age
and did not know all the means by which people abandon life at will,
he continued to go
to the grammar school and to kneel in the corner,
Give back!
Wolf-cub!
Lollipop-roosters
Look!
Come on, come on! Op-op-op!
Wolf-cub!
'Where have you been knocking about all night, sonny ? '
' Sashka ! the Svetchnikovs have invited you to the Christmas tree.'
You're lying!
I swear it.
The housemaid came,
The rich and fat!
I won't go to those devils.
"But I say you shall go!"
'Auntie — auntie, do give me one thing from the tree ; give me the little angel.'
It is impossible. I promised it to Kolya.
Is it not pretty?
-Yes, there's something most remark- able about it
Look, she is going to fly.
On one level with the eyes of the man, who had lived his life,
sparkled the eyes of the boy, who was beginning his life,
and embraced the little angel in their caress.
The father and son did not look at one another :
their sick hearts grieved, wept, and rejoiced apart
But there was a something in their feelings which fused their souls in one,
and annihilated that bottom- less abyss
which separates man from man
and makes him so lonely, unhappy, and weak.
Alone on Christmas night
whines a huddled, yellow-eyed wolf-cub
In our old forest a purple light shine diffused
On the chubby trees: - Diamonds
and twinkling stars on the carpet of heaven.
The glowing wax-angel drips from her toes,
The disheveled cub awaits miracles
while the forest is silent, gray and smooth.
and an angel in her abode, goes out to comfort
silently, taking the shape of a mother wolf
big, strong and furry
on her belly gentle, soothing ***.
The animals join up, panting and squinting eagerly
The cub, the stars, The trees, and heaven
everything was filled with joy that night.
