>> In the fall, RIT was named a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists.
They come and they evaluate us based on our application. It was, how safe are the routes?
How available are routes to bicyclists? How well have you communicated it to the university’s
population? Do you have showers when someone arrives? Do you promote commuting by bicycle?
Do you have bicycle programs and bicycle repair shops?
So, really, the cycling club was a very important component because the cycling club has a lot
of enthusiasts and with that roaming or traveling repair shop, it might have been the one thing
that put us over the top.
>> Well, this is the RIT Mobile Bike Shop and our goal on campus here is to bring an
affordable bike maintenance service to everybody on campus.
Probably the most common thing we do is we give out free air to everyone who stops by
on campus. Mot bikes every two or three weeks need to get a little bit of air in those tires,
so you know, on any given day we’re probably filling up 15-20 bikes with air.
As far as repairs that we’re actually doing, a lot of flat tires, brake adjustments, lubricating
some chains, some really basic stuff like that, all the way up to really complicated
replacing headsets, bottom brackets.
Our goal is to really improve the quality of cycling around campus.
We’ve got the entire bike path around here, which is fantastic, there’s bike racks in
front of every building. I think right now, cycling is probably the best way to get around
It’s much faster than walking, and it’s much better for the environment than taking
a bus or driving your car.
