SBR Summit Bechtel Reserve Spotlight at OR- Gregory Mountain Products
If I look back on my Scouting career, what made and got me motivated was a good Scout Master,
and actually a number of them. I had four Scout Masters in my time in Scouting when I was growing up.
And one Scout Master said, "Hey, we want to go to the High Sierras, so lets make our own backpacks as a project."
So by making a simple backpack, I was able to learn the skills and what was required
to make it, put it on my back, feel it, put my gear into it...
And I think I think I did a pretty good job, because one of my friends wanted to buy it from me.
So, that intrigued me about being able to work with my hands, and to be able to build something by myself,
as an item I could take and use in my camping experience.
A lot of us that are Scouters and Eagle Scouts started our own equipment companies.
And also, others became mountain guides, like Doug Robinson, you know.
And when you sit down at night around the campfire and ask him, "What did you do? How did you get exposed to the out of doors?"
Most all the time it's, "Oh, I was a Boy Scout." That's how it all got back to.
And then what they did and carried on with.
So, Scouting has been a part of a lot of our lives, and it's responsible for who I am today.
So, you know, going through, uh, you know, if you just take the Merit Badges...
All the choices that we had to pick a Merit Badge, learn about it, and then apply and use it in our lives today
in business and all the things — accounting — all those Merit Badges that we use and had the ability to do as young people
made me a better businessman and a better community service, and what I do and enjoy doing with youth.
