Hi, this is David back with Expert Village. Now I'm going to show you one of my more fun
repairs. How to remove a crank arm. This requires two special tools. One of them again made
by Park, they rock. Another is simply another special tool. You can buy this on line, you
get it at a bike store, but they'd have to special order it most likely. Some may carry
it, you may have better luck than I did. I picked this one up on line. What your going
to do with these two tools is, this little guy, you stick in here under the nut. You
go to hold that in place, with the thumb. Then take this fifteen millimeter tool and
put this little do-hickey on top of the other do-hickey and I'm going to loosen it. By the
way, the technical term for all of this stuff is called the do-hickey. All I do is crank
on that sucker, what you do is you actually loosen this nut that is on the outside of
the crank arm by cranking down to the left. Left loosen, right tighten. You crank that
down to the left, like that, what that does is that will loosen this little nut right
here. Once that guy gets popped out, you need to have a way to pull the crank arm actually
off the bike. It's really wedged on there. That's what this guy is for; you actually
loosen this up all the way. There are threads inside the crank arm. What you do is you take
these threads after that pole has been removed, you screw this into that, then when this little
special tool is screwed all the way in, you take this little do-hickey and you tighten
that down. As you tighten that, that exerts pressure on the axle and it pushes the crank
arm away from the bike. That's basically how you pop off a crank arm. It's not a rocket
science, but, it can seem like it when you?re working on a bike. Because it can be very
frustrating. This is only something you should really do if you really feel adventurous and
have a lot of time on your hands, or if you need to do it. It's a vital operation to perform,
if you want to have a good functioning bicycle. That's how your perform a crank arm removal
and this David for Expert Village. Next I'm going to demonstrate for you how to install
a water bottle cage.
