Hi there, this is Kirby Ferguson and this is my second video in a three part video series
for iStock Photo, which will get you acquainted with the wonderful world of video. This second
installment is called How Graphic Designers Can Get Started With Video.
So I was a graphic designer for many many years and gradually kind of shifted over into
doing video work. And I found that when I got started in video, my background in graphic
design was actually a great great help to me. So if you're a graphic designer you've
already got skills that will transfer over to the world of video very nicely. All you've
really got to do is get acquainted with a video editor, like Final Cut Pro or Premiere
Pro or Sony Vegas or whatever, and you can start making good simple videos pretty quickly.
So without further ado I'm going to step over to the computer, give you a quick overview
of the kinds of things that you can do with skills that you mostly already have.
So this is not a tutorial. I'm just giving you kind of a quick overview of the sorts
of things you can do with just learning some basic techniques I think. And employing some
of the methods that you've already got from your time doing graphic design.
Okay, so here I am in Adobe Premiere Pro. I've made a little clip to demonstrate some
clips for you. I'm going to play that for you right now, then I'm going to come back
and I'm going to give you a quick overview of what I did to produce that clip.
So what I've basically done here is very simple. Early on here there's some quick cutting.
That's perhaps at an intermediate kind of level. But basically it's just titles, nicely
typeset titles on solid colors. Here they have blending modes. It's really just a string
of clips basically. I've strung together four different clips here. I've timed the cuts
in the video to match with the music. And the there is a fade out here at the end.
It's really a simple thing. It's blending modes, it's simple cutting. It'll take you
a while to get this level of finesse probably. But I think you can see that these are not
sophisticated effects that are being employed here and I think we're getting a reasonably
sophisticated feeling product because I'm using good graphic design technique. Okay,
I'm going to step away from the computer now and wrap this up.
I'll code with a word of caution about, this, about audio. If you're going to record audio
in your videos, you've got to be careful. People will not tolerate bad audio. So if
you're going to include audio, you have to do some research. You've got to get a good
mic. And you have to run some tests and make that everything is sounding good. As a graphic
designer, your skills do not translate to audio. Unless you happen to be a musician
or something on the side. So be very careful with audio because people will not put with
bad audio. Thank you again for watching. The third and
final installment in this video series is called How to Animate Stock Illustrations.
See you there, thanks.
