All of the equipment we'll be using in this demonstration is available to be signed out from the IT help desk.
One great place to start with video is with these Flip Video cameras.
They're really simple to use. There's a power button to turn it on and off, and one red button here to start and stop recording.
When you are ready to download your footage,
you just open the USB connector and plug it into your computer to transfer the files, like you would with a digital camera
We also highly recommend you use a tripod.
A tripod can make the difference between your video looking professional and amateur.
Unless of course you want your video to look like you’re chasing down a politician.
When you are choosing where to film you have to consider lighting and sound.
You want to choose a well-lit area, avoiding potlights, which make you look ghostly and haggard.
You also want to avoid having the light source behind your head which can make you look like your trying to hide your identity.
Also chose a location that is not too noisy.
This can be challenging as it’s hard to find a quiet spot to film.
[loud noises]
You can book a study room, try to find an empty classroom or book an appointment to come and film in our studio.
When positioning the camera, get as close as possible without being too close as the camera will be better able to pick up the audio.
Also position the camera at eye-level or slightly above your subject
so that you’re not peering up into their nose or and causing them to have a double chin
If you would like to superimpose text or graphics on the screen during the editing process,
leave some blank space on either side of the subject
or have the subject hold up a blank object, like a piece of paper.
Then you can add in important words, concepts or images on the screen.
When you are ready to begin filming make sure you cue in your subject by counting down from 5.
Staying silent on 2 and 1.
5, 4, 3, [silent 2 and 1]
This will be your marker for where to trim the footage during the editing process and it will save you a ton of time during post-production.
When you're appearing on camera, try to be an amped up version of yourself.
We like to call it "psychotically perky"!
You're regular cheerful self might not come across on camera.
Another big help during editing is to pause for 2 seconds after you are done your take
as this will allow time for a transition to be added during the editing process.
"...please feel free to contact us"
"oh, you have to stay still..."
Many a perfect take has been ruined by someone laughing, or looking away too soon after they are done their take.
