Hello, I'm Doctor Bernice Bernhard, a New York State licensed psychologist practicing
here in New York City. In this clip we're going to talk about how to tell your parents
that you're gay. Clearly we wouldn't be talking about this if this wasn't very difficult for
you. Probably, your parents already have a suspicion. They may not, but probably they
do. I think whatever age you are, whether you're fourteen or forty-four, I think the
time to be honest with your family is now. Tell them, you know, either in person or in
a letter, if it's too hard, I like a letter only because it gives them time to absorb
it. And in the letter or in person, please not on the internet or on the phone, but in
a letter or in person, say you know, mom and dad, I love you, I have something very important
to tell you. I have known that I'm gay and I have functioned as a gay person for many
years, and because I'm very close to you and you have not know about this part of my life,
I've always felt that there was this great distance between us and I think it's time
now that you know. In addition there is a very important person in my life that I would
like you to meet. I want you to know that two minutes ago before you read this or before
you heard me, you loved me, I would like to think that since you loved me two minutes
ago, you love me still as I love you. Thank you, this is Doctor Bernice Bernhard.
