The Voice coach Ricky Wilson has become embroiled in a fix row after it was revealed that he
had been signed to the same label as one of his acts. The Kaiser Chiefs frontman turned
his chair for Jersey rocker Jamie Lovatt on Saturday night's show and persuaded him to
come on to his team. But despite admitting that his band Romance used to be signed to
the same record label as the Kaiser Chiefs, Lovatt denies that the show was fixed.
I don't think he knew my voice. He's never really heard my material, but I'm pretty sure
when he turned around, he probably though, "Hang on a minute. I know that person." But
we'd never met until that day, so there's no fix. We just have a lot of mutual contacts,
but this music industry is small, and when you're in a band, 90% of the time or 99% of
the time if you're on a label with other bands, you're going to know what they look like and
you're going to know what they sound like. But Ricky's never heard me sing, but he knew
who I was just because we had the same A & R guy and the same label boss. It's a small
world, and I think people in Jersey more than anyone else will know how that feels. Everyone
knows something about you. That's just how it is.
The 23-year-old didn't just impress Ricky, as Kylie Minogue also turned her chair and
described him as a rock god, something which made the singer's choice even harder.
It was difficult. You're given as much time as you need, but you're still sort of... Once
you're done, you want to get out of there and just sort of just work out what's happening
in your head, so it's really tricky, but Ricky and I used to be on the same label, and he's
a frontman so it made it and he turned first... First come, first serve I guess. But yeah
it was difficult. Very difficult, especially when like I said on TV, those were the two
people that I was really hoping would turn around, so it was tough, but I think I've
made the right decision for me. I'm sure other people will disagree with that. My father
definitely does, but you know it's... When you're in a situation like that, you have
to think on your feet and go with it. And I'm happy with the decision I made.
