I'm Bill Elzey with Showplace Lawns. Let's talk a little bit about preventing weeds in
our lawns. The best way to prevent a weed is to keep it from coming up in the first
place, and for that, you would use a weed pre-emergent. The best weed pre-emergent to
use is Corn Gluten Meal. What Corn Gluten Meal does to a weed's seed is to prevent it
from forming a root. That first stage in the germination process is form a root, and then
the plant comes up. If it can't form a root, it's not coming up. So Corn Gluten Meal keeps
the seed from sprouting to keep the weed from coming up. Unfortunately Corn Gluten Meal
won't work on one weed that is already started. That one you will have to pull when it comes
up. But make sure you get the root. The other way to prevent weeds is to have a very nice
thick lawn. The thick lawn comes from healthy soil, proper care and good fertilization program.
So a thick lawn and a weed pre-emergent, two best ways to prevent weeds from coming up
in your lawn.
