Hi! I'm Michelle Kennedy. Welcome to the new Student Services Building. I'm an Admissions
and Recruitment Officer here at Durham College and I'm also a Durham College graduate. I
graduated from the sports administration program in 2000.
If someone were to ask me what my favourite part of being a Durham College student is,
I wouldn't want to lie. Being a varsity athelete is probably the best part of my experience
here.
Today I'm here to take you on a tour of our new Student Services Building. So hope you
enjoy the ride.
So this hallway runs north through the Student Services Building and is a direct link to
our Simcoe Building right here on the left hand side. You see a playground for the Early
Learning Centre when Durham College had a daycare on campus. It's going to be converted
to non-academic space.
And there's lots of meeting space here in the bottom floor of the student services building.
There's some great classroom space available as well... it's locked!
For recruitment events, we have a presentation room that can be divided into two separate
rooms so that's really great for people like myself who like to present.
This here is the most northern end of the Student Services Building. Conveniently located
in a discrete area is our LGBTQ Centre as well as the women's centre, if students need
some special assistance in that area.
Now I'm going to introduce you to the best kept secret on campus. Tim Hortons without
a lineup.
We have a state-of-the-art queuing system which we call Q-nami which allows students
to come into the building or prospective students and go into the system and register for an
appointment if they need to speak with someone. And it will print off a handy little ticket
here.
So, once you've punched your number into the system you've got your handy little ticket,
you can look around the building in different locations and there's a queuing board to let
you know what place you are in line. There's two people waiting, and one of them's me...
A 108. Bingo!
One of the great things about the Student Services Building is we have amazing security
guards on campus. With the increase in technological advances in equipment we have here, we need
to ensure that we have people with physical stature that can sometimes be intimidating
to deter people from, you know, commiting crimes.
Good morning beautiful. How are you? Welcome! Thanks for coming and have yourself a great
day.
This office here on my left is the International business office. That's where we recruit students
internationally.
OK on my left are some more staff meeting space. On my right here is Career Services,
Diversity and Student Life office.
This is the staff lounge here. Oh, look at that! We have Sue Hawkins, one of my favourite
people. Say hi Sue! And a nice industrial sized fridge so everybody can keep their food
stored and dairy products fresh.
So we're inside the career services office, now. And you can see down the hall here are
some stations where students can come, and prepare resumes and cover letters and get
information on jobs that are available across the province.
On the north-east side of the building, you'll notice we have a green roof here. Green roof
acts almost like a hat. It keeps the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Welcome to the office of the registrar. This is the department that falls under Paul Bishop's
umbrella. Right here on my left we have records and registration. So when students become
students here at Durham College this is where we keep all their academic information.
Down the hall here further on the left hand side is the office of Admissions and Recruitment,
which again, is my area.
Here's some meeting room specifically reserved for the Admission and Recruitment officer.
If they want to have any one-on-one appointment with students in terms of the application
process, where they stand with the application process, and any information on any programs
they're interested in.
This is the office behind 721-3000. So anyone calling the college and calling that phone
number this is where the people hide. There are actually faces behind the phones. Would
have been nice if someone was on the phone.
We're entering the west side of the second floor of the Student Services Building, where
you'll find the Student Academic Learning Services.
This is a space where students can come for academic help on anything from writing essays
to studying techniques for an exam or test.
Good afternoon.
This is the quiet study area where students can come during their quiet off time to work
on assignments and study for tests.
This is the view of the north side of the second floor of the Student Services Building.
And that there is what we refer as the K block. Don, the president, promised that of May 1st,
if that building wasn't down he was going to drive his own personal car through it.
"Hi Michelle".
"Hey, Don."
"I wonder if I could borrow your car keys. I just have a little driving to do this afternoon...
use your car for a few minutes?"
"Ummmm. No."
On behalf of everyone at the Student Services Building, including Don my close friend, I'd
like to say thanks for visiting our crib. Peace out!
