Female cop crashes into stolen car to stop thief
Hsinchu policewoman Li Bi-ru is a rookie cop with just 8 months on the job
Yesterday she drove her police car into a stolen car
helping to catch 29-year old crook Chang Yun-lu.
Early yesterday Chang was driving a stolen car
in Taoyuan County when he failed to stop at a police checkpoint
and took off in the direction of Hsinchu City.
Li and her partner were on patrol when they were informed
the stolen car was heading in their direction.
She immediately decided
to use her patrol car to block the road and stop the stolen car.
The stolen car crashed into the patrol car
spraining Li's wrist in the process
but she still helped detain the driver.
"Because it was an emergency situation
and the driver was traveling at 130kph, 140kph."
"So, I just drove forward a little
to block the car."
"Will this affect your work from now on?
Will you be fearful?"
"I don't think so."
"She only graduated from police school in January [this year]
and is a student of last year's class."
"Day-to-day in the station her attitude to
her work and service
is that she is very keen to learn."
While Li Bi-ru's commanding officer approved of her heroics,
at the same time he reminded officers
not to use cars to block vehicles in the future
to ensure they don't come to any harm.
After questioning the detainee,
as well as being charged with theft and disrupting an officer on duty,
will also be responsible for the US$5,000 cost to fix the damaged patrol car.
