Ben: Alrighto, it’s Ben here with my local roofing
expert and I’m asking him the tough questions and getting the real nitty gritty of that
quality roof repair work. So, ah here in Calgary and in Canada we have the wonderful experience
of snow. [yes] and I wanna know about that ice and I guess water protection for my roofs.
What’s the deal with that and getting my roof ready for the right season?
Roofing Specialist: Absolutely.Well, ice and water protection
shield I think is what you were alluding to. Ah, it’s become very common practice in
the roofing industry in the last ah ten years. Prior to that, they didn’t have it. Ice
and water protection shield is designed for one thing: to ensure that when we get a change
in weather and there is ice melting, specially again you know in Calgary with the Chinooks,
what happens is the water at night gets under the shingle and then of course ice or water
when it freezes, it expands. So if you get this continually happening, starts to work
itself under the roof shingles. And this will happen in vent areas, on your valley flashing
and across where your eaves trough is. And so the practice that a good roofer should
do, it’s actually essential is to put ice and water protection shield on your drip edge
areas where your eaves are, on your valley flashing and on your air vent. And the reason
being is, it will stop any ice because it bonds to the wood, to the shingle and to the
metal - and that will simply allow no ice and water to get in. Because what can happen
sometimes is well it will start to melt, the heat of the roof will start to melt the water,
comes down and hits the pool of the eaves trough, and it freezes it first. Then you’ll
see it on many of the eaves trough, starts to back up with ice. That ice will start to
get under the shingles. If you do not have ice and water protection it’s amazing how
it will dam up, and of course when the weather changes, that ice is gonna be inside your
roof, under the shingles. Ben:
So, just by taking the precaution, and that extra step of having the ice and water protection
shield on my roof, I can prolong its life and decrease the likelihood of leak, is that
right? Roofing Specialist:
Absolutely, and in addition to that the importance of doing the ice and water protection shield,
it’s really vital to the welfare of your whole roof, the wood underneath, everything,
but it’s very inexpensive, the cost to do it is very inexpensive. There is a labor aspect
to it, and again, good quality contractors put it on. Others may overlook it because
of course they’re trying to get it done faster.
