Good day. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a Battlefield-style first person shooter set
during the events of the Strogg invasion of Earth. Now for those that don't remember,
the Strogg were the main enemies seen in Quake 2. Now Enemy Territory is a prequel to Quake
2, but not Quake 1. You see, Quake 2 is not a direct sequel to Quake - in fact, it has
nothing to do with it at all. ID Software simply couldn't come up with a better name,
and so just decided to slap Quake 2 on a completely unrelated game.
You have two factions to choose from: You have the GDF, or Human faction, and the evil
alien Strogg. Now, the classes from Enemy Territory are fairly basic. You have the Soldier,
Engineer, Spec Ops, Medic, but one interesting class is the Field Ops. And this of course
gets into the concept of deployables. In this game, you can call down different deployables
depending upon your class. As an Engineer, you can call down turrets that are good against
vehicles, infantry or enemy artillery. That's the thing, in this game, you can call down
artillery deployables. You get basic field guns for infantry, missiles for flying vehicles,
and of course, a GIANT missile that's good against, well, anything. Of course, the Strogg
have corresponding classes, although they are called by different names.
Now even though this game has deployables, it's still pretty generic, except when you
play it single player. Multiplayer, it's just a basic Battlefield game - single player,
it's actually a very well made first person shooter. And that's the thing, the Ai is really,
really good, better, in fact, than a lot of human players I've played against. They use
tactics quite well, and they won't just stand next to vehicles shooting at you. They will
get into the vehicle and run you over with them, or blow you up with them! They'll get
into aircraft and strafe you! They will call in artillery strikes! They will do everything
that a human player can do, and sometimes a lot better, I might add.
One rather humorous note, though - the AI bots actually talk. Sure, they're all canned
phrases, but hearing somebody sarcastically say, "Thankyou!" is pretty bloody hilarious,
especially when you're not expecting it. Also, they all have rather amusing "screen names",
so to speak.
Really, the best thing about the game is the fact that the gameplay is very organic. It
is not just a linear series of corridors where you shoot five or six guys. You actually have
to approach situations with good sense and tactics. You can't just run in and shoot everybody.
If you try to run in and do anything, you'll promptly be killed by a turret. If you get
in a tank and think you're just gonna go on a rampage, uh-uh. There are vehicle turrets
that will kill you in about two seconds. That is, of course, if you get anywhere near them
and haven't already been destroyed by an enemy plane.
Really, I recommend enemy Territory: Quake Wars, not necessarily for its multiplayer,
mainly because it's fairly generic, but for its single player. It is really a unique experience.
And so, this is Jon, wishing you good Battlefield: 2142, good Battlefield 2, or whatever makes
you happy.
