I'm Laurel Hitchcock, director of the Social Work program
and I'm really pleased to see you here today
for our Advocacy Day 2011.
Jeanie Duke: I had the marvelous pleasure two summers ago
to work with Dr. Dan Marullo
as part of a grant through the Department of Human Resources
to provide training for their social work staff
particularly in child welfare.
The topic that Dan will be presenting to you today is an abbreviated version of a six-hour workshop
that we did in five locations across the state two summers ago.
Dan is a dynamic speaker, he is an expert in the area that he's going to be talking with you.
He has extensive experience working with children and their families...
...Feel free to stop me at any time and ask any questions or comments
I really prefer that, I just think it makes for a more interesting presentation...
As Jeanie said,
I've been in the field of pediatric psychology and neuropsychology almost 20 years now...
...there's still a lot of art to it. There's still a lot of the experience...
[There's the skill of] making an informed decision based on your gut
and it's actually from your training, from your experience, and from the experience of your colleagues...
Off camera: "Could you introduce yourself for us, please?"
I'm Dorann Tanner.
Off camera: "And what do you do for a living?"
I'm the social worker for Shelby County Schools.
Off camera: "What got you interested in social work?"
Originally, when I went to UAB, I went to go into medicine.
Once I started my career one of my advisors told me to take Intro to Social Work for an elective...
When I got in there I loved it.
I love social work. I loved working with families and communities...
...and how everything works together to make a person who they are...
Next speaker: My name is Stephanie Marie Porterfield. I am a social work major at the University of Montevallo
and I'm doing my practicum placement at UAB Womens Complications Clinic
Off camera: "Why did you decide to do social work?"
Because I a people person, I like to help people , I like to talk...
Put all of that together, and you get social work!
Off camera: "Is this your first Advocacy Day meeting?"
No, I've been a major since my freshman year...
Off camera: "What do you like best about Advocacy Day?
I like it because, for professionals like myself, I always want to use best practices concerning assessments.
I always want to do what's best for the child.
It's related to [continuing] education, so it keeps me on that path of doing what's best...
These are the University of Montevallo Social Work tee-shirts. And we are selling them for $20.00 to non-students...
When you see this video on YouTube I want you to send us a check, and we will send you this shirt!
