we can always do better we can always get safer we can
we need to acknowledge all the time when things are not
as safe as we want them to be there is
a need to improve safety everywhere not just about isolated pockets
actually everybody can do better
Berwick took that and
gave it a framework. He's got a great little phrase
everyone has two jobs, they have their job and they have the job of improving their job
we've got to get safety
out of this sort of compliance,
punishment, fear blame
mindspace and move to somewhere where
we can always do better, we can always get safer,
we need to acknowledge all the time when things are not
as safe as we would want to be and to take tangible
immediate action to address those issues
but without this idea that you only reason you do it is because you're going
to be blamed if you don't
Don talked about to instilling pride and joy in everything
that everyone does, that is what safety is about, it's about taking pride in what
you do
recognising where you can do something safer and doing it more safely
the the key learning in his report was
for us to instill a culture of continuous learning improvement within
the NHS
and in effect the collaboratives
are a mechanism, a way of pump priming that
it's not about NHS England
dictating what happens it's about aNHS England supporting
collaboratives in every part of England to
identify what is important to them, what is important their patients what are the
things that they need to improve on
and to give them the support, infrastructure, bit of money
in order to allow them to undertake that improvement work and to give them the skills
they need to undertake that improvement work
and and then when they've done something good when they've identified an
intervention that's
made a real difference to their patients, it's making sure everybody else knows about
it as well
so that kind knowledge transfer.
going to the gym and
eating well being happy
I go do to the gym when I can but I have two small children so it's not that easy
and I ry and eat my five a day
as recommended by the chief medical officer. Everything
getting them vaccinated
making sure they eat well, if you can. You ever try giving a 3 year old vegetables you know that
it's not that easy,
but they eat lot's of fruit
