it's a brand new session season two thousand and thirteen my name is dave
barber and we call the segment capital spotlight.
there five minutes in length and we'd like to visit with members of the
general assembly and discuss some of the things they've been working on in the
impact argue the rhode island citizen
now this is our very first session of capital spotlights for the new session
we're coming to you this day from the east gallery
other rhode island house of representatives in a really gives me a
great deal of pleasure to welcome a gentleman
i'm making his first appearance here because he's brand new in the building
he's a freshman representative from the city by to see newport rhode island it's
my pleasure to welcome representative marvin apne represented is great to see
you thank you very much it's a great time to be here
well and as i mentioned to you before the taping today
i'm a huge fan of your community not only is it one of the great communities
in our state but i think it's one of the great communities in the united states
of america it has to be exciting a living there in b representing the folks
at newport
is very exciting live india and representing the people who borders
unbelievable
i'm from texas originally never thought i would be living in the city about the
they
in fact my brother and his wife came for the inauguration yesterday and even
those winter they loved newport they'll offer or island in general but they
really love report you mentioned that your life is ag native of newport uh...
why did she tell our viewers since we're just getting to meet you
a little bit about your family
in a little bit about your professional life as well
my wife her maiden name is ammar and strong amato
and she lived in newport all ur life was born in raise their back she was born in
newport hospital
which makes for a real newport or
her grandfather was leo who used on a place called meals first and last stop
on the wharf and many many people uh... in rhode island but in newport
particular know that
but she was born raised here on the tax in texarkana texas but when i retired
from the army in nineteen ninety four
we thought about where we want to raise out three children i have two sons
amador one of my son's is in afghanistan it is towards the west point graduate
and in part he's one of the reasons i'm standing talking to you now another son
who's a chef over the navy base in the door who works to child care center but
without a new poll revealed great place to raise of family and so we moved back
here at that point been i got involved in a lot of the social things that will
go on
so professionally speaking you were area
military man i was a military officer for almost when one years
uh... after i retired i want to work with smith barney
as a registered representative
and i spent about seven and a half years though here working uh... at the
department of education here in problems but my basic background as that of a
military officer in now did your military career i'd take you
to a lot of places around the world
it took us to a lot of places around the world we spent uh...
five of the best years of our lives in belgium working at nato
please call she
uh... my boys with the school there so
was a great great time
it gave me and i think it gives me a great perspective
of all what it takes to get things done
he you mention that you had relatives here
for the swearing-in on uh... january the first
are very very special day are what went through your mind is that and you were
raising your hand taking the oath of office unlike history buff innocents
uh... what went through my mind was that you are now sitting
have a seat with seven five other people of the seat of power in rhode islanders
the seed of understanding
and i'm one seventy fifth
of a group of individuals that will be promulgating laws that will govern
nearly a million people and they'd just kiss you
at that point that this is important
this is serious
uh... and that people before we made that read about in history were in the
same place
doing the same thing well and especially from the community that you represent my
goodness the old colony house
which has served as our very first day i was here in rhode island is in your
backyard
in again on newport is certainly rich with history now is you move forward
innocent calendar continues to get more busy representative
are there certain pet projects or issues that you would like to concentrate on or
our priorities to you
in the coming two thousand thirteen session
well the calendar is getting very bizarre you're right about that
but overall i don't think there's any doubt in anybody's man who lives in this
state
that out that the moment stability
the long-term growth of uh... of our economy is absolutely mckee that any of
us have to have to be involved and so i hope to spend a lot of time learning to
understand it running out of project not just wanna to budget years i'll bug five
ten fifteen twenty years out so that no matter what political partisan power
businessmen people who want to start businesses here will have no idea what
the climate is going to be like so thats docile broadview but i like to do that
are common education guy uh... i would love to make sure that i get involved in
making sure that our education system is the best in the world
arnaldo also like to change focus uh...
not so much from just the information system were and butter or allen as you
know years ago was a great
manufacturing spader and allow people to live all great middle-class life
not elected you know to to make sure that that doesn't go away just because
we've gone for the information age well i have to tell you represented based on
your background you certainly seem well prepared and certainly well-versed
to serve in this capacity
i wish you and your colleagues not only a freshman colleagues but the veterans
that are here the very best this session and i want to thank you so much for
taking time to talk with us and i look forward to maybe one day capital t_v_
coming down to your community in visiting you there it's a great honor
and i appreciate it from all of the people who supported me as i said when i
served in the military and my son serving now
we do that
so that we can do what we do here in this great state thank you so much
they're thank you very much so it of course thanks to you to for our watching
capital spotlight from the east gallery
