Sabine In better control with her pump since 2010
Planning a healthy pregnancy with Type 1 diabetes
I have had diabetes for 18 years now and I'm 38 years old.
Two years ago, my partner and I wanted to have a baby,
so we went to my physician
to find out whether my HbA1c was good enough to get pregnant.
Unfortunately it wasn't.
That was a huge disappointment
and I didn't have years left to just keep trying.
He told me about insulin pump technology
and he thought that would be the best option
to get my levels under control as quickly as possible.
At the time I thought it was a terrible idea.
I cried my heart out.
I thought, now everyone will see that I have diabetes.
It was really awful for me.
Looking back, it was much better than I expected.
I've now got to the point that if they were to take it away from me,
I'd be really upset,
because of course the best thing about insulin pump technology is
what it has given me, my little boy.
Because soon after I started with the pump,
my levels were so good that I got the go-ahead.
And sure enough, shortly after that, I got pregnant.
My levels were actually better than ever during the pregnancy.
They keep a close eye on you when you're pregnant and have diabetes.
So every other week I had an appointment and everything was checked.
When you're pregnant, you go through different phases as well.
In the beginning, you get a lot of hypos
and at the end you get a lot of hypers.
I needed double the amount of insulin.
Every time I went, that was checked
and we decided what to do next.
My levels were so good at that time, they'd actually never been as good.
Now I have a healthy, 18-month-old son.
The birth was fine too as far as my blood sugar was concerned.
I didn't have any hypos or hypers.
We would really like to have another baby.
My HbA1c is so good at the moment that we can start trying.
So I'm hoping of course
that I'll soon be able to bring another child into the world.
Thanks to the insulin pump,
my blood sugar has stayed perfect all this time.
This time there is no question of having to adjust everything
and my levels are just fine.
My HbA1c is always below 7, so we've been told we can go for it.
That's obviously the best thing about pump technology for me.
The insulin pump has simply become part of my life and part of my body.
I really wouldn't want to be without it.
