The decision to study abroad was an easy one. It was deciding where I wanted to call home
for the next four months was the tough decision, and choosing Thessaloniki, Greece, was a great
choice. I had never really moved out of Kansas before, and when I did, it never lasted long.
Questions raced through my head like what my roommate would be like, what our apartment
would look like, and what I would eat for the next four months. My fears were calmed
the first day when I arrived and met my roommate. For me, knowing that someone was in the same
position of not knowing where the grocery store was was reassuring that I would have
someone to tackle my everyday tasks with. You learn fast how to become Greek. By that
I mean you just get used to people cutting in line, and soon you learn how to stand so
that it doesn’t happen as much. It took me hardly any time to adapt to the culture.
Being surrounded in it makes it a part of your everyday life. The most rewarding part
of this experience would have to be the lifelong friends that I have made. I know if I can
study abroad, anyone can do it. 20
