Hello- welcome to your Advocacy Minute, January 2014!
Today's topic, and it can be a confusing one- many people confuse 'certified', 'licensed',
and 'registered'. What's the difference? They're all the same,
right? No, they're actually not.
'Certified' has to do with testing- that's all. Testing includes evaluating one's skills,
knowledge, ability- then being certified from passing the test.
'Licensed' means permitted to work. Different states have different licensing
laws for barbers, for lawyers, for doctors, and that can include interpreters.
A license means you are permitted to work in that state.
'Registered' means you are listed. Now, I could go into great detail about exceptions
and exemptions, but this focuses on the real key differences between certification (meaning
testing), licensing (permit to work), and registered (means listed).
That's your Advocacy Minute!
