Hi this is Dave Cahill here at our Palm Springs Golf Schools here in Palm Springs. We are
looking at golf swing basics. A nice summary of all of the golf swing basics...Including
the set up. He we have the face on view using the driver. Starting from the heels they are
about 15 inches apart. This is for a golfer who is 6 feet 1 , which is my height. If you
are a little taller or shorter adjust the width accordingly. With an iron for my height
my heels are about 12 inches apart. Notice with the driver that the ball position is
at the inside of the front foot. This is because the ball is teed up with the driver. Notice
as usual that the butt end of the club is pointing at the inside of the thigh. Also
notice that I have cocked or swiveled my head in the direction of the target. When we move
to the side view you will notice starting from the feet that i have slightly pulled
my trailing foot off the line to allow easier rotation of my hips in the backswing. My biceps
are hanging straight down from my shoulders. If yo look at my spine you will notice their
is a small curvature in the upper thorax. And you will also notice that my tail bone
is very slightly protruding out an inch or so. My knees are slightly bent. You can see
again that my head is swiveled slightly in the direction of the target.
Here is a little demonstration of the turning motion in the backswing. Notice the golf swing
is founded on the principle of rotation and if you notice from the down the line view
of the golf swing. When we rotate ou shoulders bacl and forth our arms and the golf club
move exactly on the same plane of my rotation. From the face onview of the golf swing you
will notice the same thing. When I rotate my hips and torso level on the back swing
the arms and golf club follow along. If yo put the golf club accross your shoulders you
will notice wen I get in my spine angle tilt, now the clubs and arms will move perpendicular
to the spine angle. . So when i turn back the club follow. When I turn back and maintain
that spine angle will follow it exactly back in the forward swing. And now watch when I
get in my address position watch how when i turn... and you can see this in a mirror
or with your camera. The club will follow and in this case watch how i have pushed my
arms inside the line. I manipulate my arms and wrists to put the club too far inside.
Now watch when i turn back correctly an how the club moves perpendicular to my spine and
th club will go exactly on the target line through impact. You can see this clearly in
sl;ow motion of the golf swing. Perpendicular o the spine and the club is coming right up
the fore arm line. Staying in the spine angle and simply turning. notice how my right bicep
especially the upper portion has remained close to my.torso. Now i am going to do a
little demonstration of what happens to the golf club if I turn the shoulders to flat
in relationship to my spine angle. This is like casting over the top of the golf plane.
But if I move my shoulder perpendicular to my spine on the forward swing..turning the
right shoulder down, under, forward and through. The club follows the turn exactly on the correct
line to the ball. Thos are the golf swing basics.
