(Screams and cheers from the players and fans-short staccato piano music)
(short staccato piano music)
(upbeat acoustic guitar music begins)
Shunami Bomb: Well i actually moved out here a couple years ago
and was tryin' to find my nitch,
and went down to the Third Street Promenade and there was some girls
in some underpants, and they looked awesome and
they were like, 'come on and join!'
And they were so friendly and it was a way to meet people and friends
and kinda fell in love and stuck with it.
Nefertitties: I saw a documentary on the Austrailian Roller Girls and I checked
to see if there was any (roller derby leagues)in the area and found out
there was roller derby leagues all over the world and
I just had to be a part of it.
Interviewer: Did you play any sports when you were younger?
No. I was never a sports person
I didn't have an athletic bone in my body until I started doing (roller) derby.
Shunami Bomb: You can't tell. Nef: (chuckles)
Shunami: You bump into people and you see them. And the first thing you say is
'Oh I do roller derby now' like that. I feel like that's the first thing
If you get in love with this sport that's like the first thing that
you tell people. It's like 'Yeah I do roller derby!
It's really awesome!'
Nef: And then the most (common) question we get is,
'Oh wow, so you take elbows to the face?' So you have to tell'em,
'No it's not like that anymore, like the old school (roller) derby.'
Shunami: yeah questions like,'Oh do you fight on the track?'
No...Is it like wrestling, is it fake?' No, it's real. It's a real sport now.
(upbeat guitar music continues... various cheers from players and fans)
Interviewer: What did you guys do to prepare for this first game?
Shunami: Be very scared for like three days.
Nef: Yeah, the last two weeks we scrimmaged, and that was like
the first time any of us had ever played
an actual bout with like refs and stuff.
Alot of us still have alot of learning to do.
We have to learn the rules and stuff. So it was really
nerve racking. We were all like really nervous
up until now. So it was alot of stress but it's also really fun.
Shunami: It was really fun. Nef: We had a great time.
Shunami: I did sports growing up. You know I grew up around sports
that's what I did. And when you get out of college, ya know you're
kinda just bumbin' around doin' work. This is totally the way to work out
as an adult. Or (if you're) still in school. Nef: Yeah.
I've actually never played a full contact sport. I did stuff like
swimming, rowing and stuff like that. This is full contact.
It's hard to find a full contact female sport, ya know...
that people want to get into. And this was one of the main differences.
I mean this is girls bashin' girls. It gets crazy. And I've never experienced that.
Nef: And although it's really competitive, it's also really fun.
So you have the competition part of it and the fun side of it, which you don't
see. I mean I know every sport's like that but you don't see alot
of that in other sports. It's mostly just competition and making it to the top.
Yeah the beautiful thing about derby is that anybody could do it.
Just about anybody. It's all about working. It's tough at first.
but if you love it and work at it, you could be just as great
as your favorite player.
Yeah, exactly.I've never played a sport and I love this.
I love derby. I was never for working out, up until now,
and I love it, like...It does seem scary. It's intimidating
but if you think that you want to do it, you should
definitely do it.
Shunami: I mean we totally get friends. I think that's
why alot of the girls join up.
I mean I remember my first newbie interaction. Alot
of the girls were like. 'you know I just moved out here'
Or, 'I have trouble meeting friends'
Ya know I made with friends with girls. You bash each other on the court and
then you go out drinking with them or you hang out with them at parties.
I mean it's one of the best experiences ever.
Nef: Yeah.
