GRACE HELBIG: We're here at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans.
Grace here from My Damn Channel Music Nights
presented by SoCo.
Let's get in there and join the 25,000 music fans checking
out this amazing festival.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
So what's the-- what's the first CD you ever bought?
FEMALE SPEAKER: No Doubt, "Tragic Kingdom."
MALE SPEAKER: Janet Jackson, the uh-- when the guy's
holding her ***.
MALE SPEAKER: Metallica, "Ride the Lightning."
MALE SPEAKER: The Clash, "Combat Rock."
FEMALE SPEAKER: Britney Spears.
MALE SPEAKER: Wasn't a CD.
It was a cassette.
And I think it was TLC's "CrazySexyCool."
FEMALE SPEAKER: [SINGING]
MALE SPEAKER: [SINGING]
FEMALE SPEAKER: [SINGING]
ALL: [SINGING]
GRACE HELBIG: I'm here with 3/5 of The Vettes.
What got you guys started in live music?
RACHEL: Actually, our dad has-- had
instruments around our house.
He's played music our whole life.
We actually kind of rebelled against it a little bit when
we were younger.
Then when we got into, like, our early teens, we all
started kind of picking up instruments.
GRACE HELBIG: So what's been your best live music
experience?
MALE SPEAKER: I guess today.
MALE SPEAKER: Yeah, playing with bands like REM and bands
that we've looked up to like Dashboard Confessional, and--
I'd say today, wouldn't you?
RACHEL: Yeah, I--
I would.
It doesn't get any better than that.
[SINGING]
[MUSIC PLAYING]
GRACE HELBIG: No!
No!
GRACE HELBIG: So what inspired your costumes today?
FEMALE SPEAKER: It's both our birthday.
Yeah, that's why we got the money on us.
It's New Orleans tradition.
GRACE HELBIG: Really?
You wear money on--on you for your birthday?
FEMALE SPEAKER: You wear money pinned to your left appendage.
MALE SPEAKER: [SINGING]
GRACE HELBIG: What's it like performing here, basically on
your home turf, as opposed to anywhere else?
MALE SPEAKER: Here, you know, we have a bunch of people
that's coming in town, have seen us on tour.
And we get to mix that in with our home crowd.
And it's just an amazing feeling.
GRACE HELBIG: Are you guys from this area?
MALE SPEAKER: Yeah, we're from New Orleans, from the Sixth
Ward Treme area, where jazz was created.
We from every part of New Orleans you can
possibly think of.
GRACE HELBIG: So what makes the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans
different than any other live music experience?
MALE SPEAKER: You have some of the people that laid down the
foundation, musically, for New Orleans music.
And I think, besides Jazz Festival, this is one of the
only festivals you'll be able to see some of the New Orleans
legends, like the Preservation Hall Band and Nine Inch Nails
on one day.
So that's very important.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
GRACE HELBIG: What makes Voodoo Fest different than
other live music experiences?
MALE SPEAKER: I think it brings, like, New Orleans
culture involved in it.
But it's the-- really, one of the most grungy, uh, you know,
events that we have here.
So it's kind of a chance to let the freaks come out in New
Orleans and show us what it's all about, you know?
MALE SPEAKER: It's geared towards all kinds of people.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Diversity of the music, of
the genres, you know?
There's everything, right?
Hard wor-- rock to reggae to jazz.
MALE SPEAKER: Anybody can have a great time at Voodoo, baby.
MALE SPEAKER: And I feel it all in my bones.
I love it.
It's the best.
GRACE HELBIG: We love Voodoo Fest so much that we're going
to come back with a new episode next week from right
here in New Orleans.
For My Damn Channel Music Nights presented
by SoCo, I'm Grace.
We'll see you all next week.
