Hi, the color has changed as you can see, and so has our level.
Welcome to the first intermediate darbuka class.
In Arabic handdrumming the right hand is responsible for keeping the main rhythm. And so we should teach our left hand independence. Here are some patterns.
First, let's define beats and off-beats. When you count a 4/4 rhythm, you do it "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &".
All the "&s" are off-beats. [play] These are off-beats !
And all beats are the numbers: [play].
You can join them with rhythms. For example, the left hand plays the beats.
[The Maqsum played against off-beats]
[And against beats]
Here are some left hand patterns for the Malfuf, which is a 3-3-2 rhythm.
[First one]
The second is identical, with the first beat syncopated.
They may be played together.
[First one and second one alternately]
The third one goes like this.
And the last variation is identical, but followed by a quick "KaKa" at the end.
Using the split hand technique for left hand you can also try double speed off-beats. They go between every number and every "&" while counting the bar.
Let's try it with Maqsuum.
[Maqsum played against double speed off-beats]
Of course, you don't have to do it all the time. Try variations !
[Constant Maqsuum against double speed off-beats played sometimes]
When playing this pattern of Maqsuum the left hand may at times become the dominant hand.
In this case the right hand stops playing the main rhythm and starts accompaning the left hand. Here are some variations:
[Left hand beats against right hand variations] [First line]
[Left hand beats against right hand variations] [Second line]
[Third line]
[Fourth line]
[Fifth line]
And some triplets.
[Last line]
Let's try it slower.

And combinations. [Fourth line]

And triplets. [Last line]
