whatever you are doing, you chose it and you can chose to change it
That is, if you apply zero based thinking. Stay tuned and I’ll explain.
Hey it's Brian Dixon and you are watching The Advance Show, your daily pep talk to help
you crush it at work and step up at home.
Did you know that most of your life is a choice. -Your chose what you are wearing right now.
What you listened to in the car this morning- your choice.
You want to go the next level? Yeah.
Let’s go there.
What you eat. Where you live. Who you hang out. Your choice.
Even further? Are you sure.
Ok.
How you feel. Your weight. Your physical fitness.
Your choice.
Life is a series of choices.
Where you are right now is a result of hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of tiny choices.
Many of these choices you made.
In fact, even the choices you didn’t choose can be changed.
I truly believe that.
It might be hard. It might seem impossible. But you can make a choice.
So, what is Zero-based thinking? [What is zero-based thinking?]
It’s asking yourself a simple question:
“Is there anything in my life that, knowing what I now know, I would not start up again
today, if I had to do it over?”
I’ll explain that in a second, but first, a quick story.
On the evening of our first wedding anniversary, the house Julie and I were renting burned
down to the ground. We lost almost everything we had.
One day we’re celebrating our anniversary and the next we’re inventorying all of our
burned belongings for the insurance company.
But there was a silver lining
We were only two weeks away from moving across the country and we had renter’s insurance.
After a grueling two weeks of inventorying and haggling with the insurance company, we
moved to California armed with our two cars, two new outfits, and a check for thirty thousand
dollars.
We tangibly experienced power of zero-based thinking.
We were at zero. We had lost almost everything in the fire.
I remember making a list of everything we “needed” to buy, based on decisions we
had made years before. As we looked at the list, there were items that we decided we
didn’t need anymore. We were able to reexamine all of our possessions, re-deciding whether
or not there was a place in our life for items that many just assume you would have.
For example, we opted not to repurchase our television. Instead, I found a PowerPoint
projector at a garage sale. Julie and I both enjoyed watching movies, but we found television
to be a big suck on our time. (A few years later I would hear Zig Ziglar call television
“The Great Income Suppressor”, which only helped to confirm our decision.)
But you don’t need a house fire to apply zero based thinking.
Instead, set aside some time and ask yourself the following questions.
If you could start all over again, [if you could start again]
would you -Would you buy the same wardrobe?
-Would you follow the same diet? -Would you listen to the same music?
-Would you get into the same industry? -Would you work with the same people?
And here’s the simple truth, it’s not too late to change.
You can choose to change each of these areas of your life and more.
Today, you can apply zero based thinking.
Just because you are here doesn’t mean you have to stay here.
You can make a change for the better today.
