Installing a headliner on your Fox Mustang
can be quite a task.
Add in a sun roof opening, and well, you just
turned it into a full blown job.
We're going to walk you through the steps required
to install a new headliner in your factory sun roof
equipped Fox Mustang.
Remove the middle trim pieces from over the door opening
by pulling them away from the headliner to release the clips.
Do the same for the middle trim at the top of the windshield.
A trim panel pry tool may be helpful.
Remove the screws that hold on the visors
and remove the visors from the car.
Disconnect the vanity light if equipped.
Remove the sun visor clips.
Remove the forward retaining screws on each A pillar trim,
and allow the A pillar trim to hang inward.
Release the dome light from the headliner
and disconnect it to remove.
Remove the seat belt shoulder strap anchor bolt.
Remove all of the trim panel retaining screws.
You'll have three at the front, one at the top, one
through the coat hook, one midway down.
Remove the four screws in the rear headliner trim piece.
Then remove the four screws going down
the back of the panel.
Finally, you can remove the two screws
retaining the hatch cover mount.
Gently pull the panel inward.
Repeat for the other side.
Remove the sun roof latch trim.
Squeeze the two sides of the latch hinge together
and separate the glass side of the latch from the body side.
Remove the sun roof from the car.
Remove the sun roof body weather strip.
Peel the headliner material away from the sun roof opening.
You can now remove the headliner from the car.
Slide your new headliner in the car
and support it using the side push pins.
Be sure the headliner is squarely positioned.
Locate and cut out the holes for the sun visors.
Remember to cut small and enlarge as needed.
Install the sun visors.
Locate and cut out the holes for the sun visor clips.
Reinstall the sun visor clips.
Locate and cut out the opening for the dome light.
Plug in the connector and clip the dome light into place.
Locate and cut out the hole for the body side of the sun roof
latch.
Reinstall the body side of the sun roof latch.
For the sun roof hole, make an opening in the headliner
material, leaving plenty of room around the edges.
Start making slight relief cuts to get the headliner material
to conform around the corners.
Cut only a little at a time.
You can always cut more later if needed.
Apply spray adhesive to the headliner material
and to the lip of the sun roof opening.
Do only small sections at a time,
allowing the glue to become tacky before positioning
the headliner material.
Work your way around the sun roof opening,
folding the headliner material over the sun roof opening lip.
Enlarge the relief cuts in the corners as needed.
Install the sun roof body weather strip.
Trim the excess headliner material
from around the sun roof opening.
Inside the car, trim the excess headliner material
from the full perimeter of the headliner.
Reinstall all your trim panels and trim parts.
And you're done.
You can achieve professional looking
results in your own garage.
My biggest piece of advice to you is to just take your time,
work through it slowly, and have an extra set of hands
available because that extra help can
make the job that much easier.
