1/3 of the Danish prisoners are returning to prison.
Now you'll meet one who tries to break that patter in an unconventional way.
He use breathing techniques and meditation.
Jakob Lund, you took on this challenge and is working with the inmates.
How can breathing techniques and meditation prevent the return to prison?
First of all it demands an effort from the person who wants to do this.
If the person is willing to make an effort-
-and no longer want to repeat their patterns over and over,-
-and have a desire to break down some of the limitations they have,-
-then there is a great opportunity to create a change.
If there is a lot of stress or imbalance in your system,-
-then there is negative thoughts and feelings.
What often happens is that you project that out in to the world in conflicts-
-in your surroundings, or you do something escape it.
Some people do drugs, others strive for intense experiences.
Others have a need for respect and acknowledgement all the time.
If they can learn to find that peace through breathing and meditation,-
-then they'll find a new way?
These unique breathing techniques can help you confront suppressed issues-
-and give you the capacity to contain these issues/states.
And behind this states you find kind of another state.
Even if you have had bad feelings, there is something even deeper underneath.
Just like you escaped these states before,-
-you now just go deeper in to them.
Then you part from them by going so deep that you get complete inner peace.
Here you obtain a deep insight about yourself.
We can ask two who have tried it. Henrik Jost and Kaj Koehler, Welcome.
You are former inmates and have done this course-
-and tried what he describe.
Kaj, what was your first thoughts about meditation?
That it is was only something for gays and women and not for men.
I've been in jail for 20 years. This is not something you do on the inside.
-So this was completely dumb? -Yes. It made you deserve a slap.
How did you feel the first time you were dressed in a pair of loose pants-
-and did yoga?
It felt ok, I met meditation and yoga some years back-
-in a high security facility, where we practiced other techniques than Jakob's.
It was ok as long as it lasted. You got a little bit of insight what it was about.
So when you met Jakob you were not so skeptical.
No. I met Jakob one and a half year ago and it was just at the right time of my life.
I was about to give myself a new jail time. I have been twenty years in jail.
-You were caught in a bad circle? -I was repeating the same old pattern.
-So change was needed. -Yes. And then I meet Jakob.
-It is a turnaround. -Yes. We'll come back to that.
But first let's see a clip from one of Jakobs courses.
Let's go to Horsens Prison.
If there's a lot of activity on the surface, then it's hard to see the depth.
As soon as the surface calms down, you will be able to see deeper down.
Then you can see what is inside, inside of consciousness.
This was of course Horseroed Prison and not Horsens Prison.
Has it been difficult to convince the inmates to meditate-
-and to give hugs?
We don't actually spend any time to convince anyone to do anything.
We spend time on selecting people out.
We emphasize the interest of working with yourself.
Difficult to give hugs...when you do this you get deeply connected to yourself.
And this connection create a deeper connection to others.
And then completely spontaneously you might give a hug, you don't think about it.
Henrik Jost, you have also been at this course, how did it help you?
It helped me...when I was imprisoned-
I was in an emotional chaos of feelings and thoughts.
For some it is about sorrow and anger, for me it was about guilt and shame.
This practice have created peace around my chaos.
It has helped me find my inner core.
It makes it possible,-
-in a very good way, to...
...reach inner peace, and figure out what to actually to do with your life.
This demands that you keep doing it.
Therefore Jakobs course continues after release.
How often do you do these techniques?
It has become a part of my daily routine.
-And what if you stopped? -I did, right after my release.
For a period I didn't do anything, because other things had priority.
Then this restlessness and chaos returned.
For me it comes natural to practice this daily.
Kaj, after twenty years in jail for the first time you've been out for three years.
You have a good life now. Are you sure you can keep it straight?
Yes. There is nothing for me in the other life style.
In the past my life was centered around the big "heist",-
-to make a lot of money and so on.
Now it has changed to be about helping others.
-So that's your payoff now? -Yes.
What gives me joy now is when a youngster comes to me and say:
"I haven't smoked dope since last week". That is truly the best.
Fantastic. Jakob, you must pat yourself on the back. It is a great advertisement-
-to hear their stories.
It is the power in these techniques.
When it suddenly becomes attractive to be with yourself, -
-then you'll be attracted to do the right things.
This is truly well done. I wish you all the best with your lives.
-I am deeply impressed. -Me too.
