Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü ’ › : I teach Legal Studies courses; Legal 20, Legal 24,
Legal 116, and a brand new course, Legal 121 and that’s basic legal environment business
courses, that’s what the first two are, and the Legal 116 is basically law relating
to intellectual property, and the last course is one that I developed last year and teaching
for the first time this semester, actually, which is entrepreneurship, or Business for
the Entrepreneur. I decided to start the entrepreneur for Law course, or Law for the Entrepreneur
course because, well, primarily because of student interest. I had a lot of student that
came to see me during office hours that actually had businesses that they were currently running
or that were interested in starting businesses, and I’m trying to give them some guidance
and trying to give them some support. It’s something, I guess, that started for me when
I was in college, as part of an Honors College seminar at Queens College. I had the opportunity
to team teach with a professor in English, and it’s something that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Soon after graduating from Law School, I started to teach as an adjunct, and then got a Dean’s
position, and really never looked back. I’ve always been interested in academic administration.
My most recent book, Business, Law and the Legal Environment of Business. It is being
published by textbook media. It can be used for Legal Studies courses, it can be used
for Introduction to Law courses, and it can also be used for six credit course sequence
in Business Law 1 and Business Law 2. I had The Legal Environment of Business, and Case
and Resource Material for the Legal Environment, both published by Prentice Hall in the late
1990s, and I also had Business Law: An Introduction for Irwin-McGraw Hill. I’m taking the foundation
of the legal environment of business textbook and very significantly expanded and updated
it. It’s a very liberating experience. Two very different things, I guess, about it.
One, it allows you to focus and to channel energies in a positive way. Two, just the
act of creation. Whether I’m writing a textbook or I’m writing poetry or fiction or whatever,
it’s the ability to make something out of nothing that you hope, when you send it out
there, that other people will find some value in it. You get to sort of people your own
world. I want them to have a functional knowledge of the law, to be able to understand basic
principles that they can apply in business as managers, as entrepreneurs, as employees
initially, to be able to navigate the sometimes dangerous waters of the legal environment
with their businesses and be able to succeed. I want them to primarily be able to think
critically. I did an individually negotiated Honors option for one of my legal 20 students
last semester. I’m doing one this semester as well. She told us, she shared with the
class, after the presentation, that she wanted to go to Law School, and that she would like
to be a professor at some point, and if that doesn’t make your day. I mean, it really
is what it is all about. It’s what makes us all faculty and all of us who work in support
services in one way or another with the university have such a good feeling about getting up
every morning, knowing that we are, quite literally, in the business of changing lives.
