"Presenting to you President Raines, a check for one million dollars..."
The University of Memphis' Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute, within the
Herff College of Engineering, is now able to see a clearer vision for its future, thanks
to a one million dollar donation from Canadian National Railroad for the CN E. Hunter Harrison
Center for Intermodal Safety and Emergency Preparedness. "It will really be able
to develop some staff capacity and being able to develop programs that could reach out and
respond to direct industry needs." The check was presented during the Institutes'
second annual Intermodal conference-Disaster recovery in freight transportation: moving
beyond first response. Robert Jamison, the undersecretary for national protection
and programs directorate at the department of homeland security, and U of M graduate,
class of '87 with a BS in electrical engineering, made a return trip to campus to share his
expertise in the transport field. "Getting state and local leaders together with federal
officials, as well as the private sector, is an important step we have to take to continue
to move forward, not only in security preparedness, but readiness for the event of a disaster."
Because of its position as a global shipping leader, the evolution of the transport industry
will have a major effect on the future of memphis, The UofM's Intermodal Freight transportation
institute is developing future leaders in the field, to help insure the growth of memphis.
"When we first initiated the whole concept of starting an institute focusing on intermodal\
freight, the reason why we did that was because of where we sit, and what memphis means,
what logistics, what supply chain, what transportation means to the memphis region."
