I was a teaching assistant in both South America and Seville
in the south of Spain, and it was just a brilliant year throughout.
I was really happy to have all the time... having fourteen, fifteen months to
spend abroad and with this, it was just a really good opportunity to
go and do stuff that I didn't normally have time to do, in a foreign language,
in a foreign country. I spent the first part of my placement in Seville
which led to my linguistic development, sufficient enough to go to Peru
and actually use the language that I had learnt and the second language was really helpful
to have it and communicate with other people. So I was initially
a little bit apprehensive about going on the Year Aboard - just the thought of having to
move to another country,
having to do the basic stuff of finding somewhere to live and setting up a bank account but
I was really impressed at how easily it came to it. Within a few weeks of
living in Seville, I was all set up and ready to enjoy living abroad.
I'm really happy with level of my language now, but also the other skills that you develop -
like working in teams,
being responsible, having the work experience and I think coming back for final year especially
it's given me the skills I've needed to pursue my final year and also given me more skills in the future.
By doing the teaching assistantship in Seville,
I learned the skills I needed to be a teaching assistant in Peru, so when I got to Peru
I was a little bit apprehensive about going into schools but the welcome was so brilliant
and the fact that these students were so happy and so excited to see your culture
that they are willing to learn.
Again having the skills from the first part of my placement meant that I was really relaxed around the children
which meant after a couple of weeks I was teaching classes again and
after the six weeks, they were so impressed with the work and the ability that I had to teach
that they actually offered me a job after I graduated,
so I'm very very excited to do that afterwards.
