Hi there, This is mrinal once again And in today’s video we'll find out
how to boost your WiFi coverage with an old router
We are going to do this in 3 steps
In the first step, we will connect to our main router
and find out its SSID, password etc
In the second step, we configure our secondary router
in such a way that it has same SSID and password as the main one,
And in the third step we will connect both routers with ethernet
cable.
So now that we understand the basis, let’s get started.
We will need 2 WiFi router or even if you have WiFi modem, it will work fine.
This main router will be connected to the line provided by your ISP,
and this secondary router will work as a repeater.
Few meters of cat 5 or cat 6 ethernet cable. I got this 10 meter of it,
for less than $2 from a local store.
And finally, a computer with ethernet port to configure your routers.
Step 1: Check details of your main router's
Open your computer and launch your favorite browser.
I am assuming that you are already connected to your main router.
So in the omnibox, type in your router's IP address.
Now if you don’t know what it is,
Open your cmd and type in ipconfig /all for windows or route -n get default.
And scroll down to see your default gateway and ip address correspond to it is your router’s
login page.
Usually it either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
Next it will ask for username and password. Again
if you don't know this look at the back of your router
or google your router's model number
In most cases it’s admin and admin
or admin and password.
Once done hit enter to login.
In the router’s setting page, goto wireless option.
Now we need to write down this routers
SSID, Mode and channel We also need the
WiFi password and it’s encryption type.
For simplicity of this tutorial I am showing this value on pop up buy you should write
it down on piece of paper or copy it in text editor of your computer.
Now close the browser and disconnect your WiFi so that our connection
with main router is terminated.
STEP 2: Configure secondary router
Now take your secondary router and power it ON.
At the back of this router you will see a small hole with reset written at the bottom
of it.
Simply take a tip of Pen and press it for 5-10 seconds,
till you all the lights on your router blinking
And that’s it, it will put your router back to factory setting.
Now keep the router powered ON and connect your secondary router
to your computer using an ethernet cable.
So put one end of the cable in the LAN port and other end on your computer.
Now again open this router login page using the same method we follow in the part
1.
Here I know my routers IP is 192.168.1.1 and then enter the login credentials.
Once you are see the router setting page, go to wireless options.
And there enter the same SSID, mode, password and encryption there.
Next you need to make sure there is no conflict between our main and secondary router.
So, First turn off the DHCP in the secondary routers.
Since our main router will do the work of assigning IP address to the device
And second, change the ip address of your secondary routers.
here in my case, my main router ip address is 192.168.1.1.
so to avoid conflict, we will assign secondary router an ip address of 192.168.1.200
Third make sure both routers are using different channel.
Since my main router is on channel 11, I will make this secondary router or channel
6.
And finally now we have make sure this secondary router work as a repeater.
Right?
So make sure your current mode is set to router only.
In some router you won’t see current mode option, like in this one.
So in that case you have to look at NAT option and make sure it’s disabled.
So overall what we have done here is Copy setting from main routers like SSID and
password Make sure there is no conflict b/w these router
by turning of DHCP and changing channel and router’s ip address
We have make sure that our secondary router only works in router mode and not gateway.
Save changes and disconnect your secondary router
STEP 3 Connect both routers
Now that we have configured both routers we are ready to move to final steps,
i.e. connection both routers with ethernet cable.
So take your ethernet cable and connect any one LAN port of main router
to the LAN port of secondary router.
Make sure you are connecting it to the LAN port of secondary router
and not WAN port
And that's it.
So what we are doing here is,
With the help of this ethernet cable we are sending internet
from this main router to secondary router.
And since both routers have same SSID, they become a part of same network.
And the device jumping back and forth between them will automatically join
the one with best signal.
