>>Surrey Future is an ambitious plan to build a consensus about what is right for Surrey’s future growth,
to ensure that Surrey safeguards the development it has already achieved
but has an agreed way to take that forward into the future.
>>Congestion and a lack of investment in Surrey’s infrastructure is one of the reasons that Surrey’s relative competitive position
has fallen back over recent years compared to other similar economies.
There hasn’t been the necessary investment in infrastructure for what we want to be which is a global economy.
This DVD gives examples of those pieces of work that are already underway in Epsom, Runnymede, Redhill and Guildford.
>>Well Epsom town centre is really at the heart of our borough.
It’s a major centre for retail and for business, but also increasingly it’s important for students
because we’re now a major campus for the University of Creative Arts.
>>Transport challenges for Epsom are purely congestion with the main A24 coming through the town,
dissecting it in half and there are sections of the high street which are suffering low footfall
due to the congestion we’re having in the town.
>>Plan E will make a big difference as we roll it out over the next five or 10 years.
It will return one part of the A24, which is currently one way, to two way.
It will try and remove some of the barriers that exist between pedestrian access and improve the ability
for pedestrians to move around the town centre and it will make it a much more friendly place for cyclists as well.
>>Transport challenges to Redill are fairly numerous.
Bottle necking for the traffic on a number of roundabouts with the partial one-way system that surrounds the town centre itself.
In addition the main A23 which forms part of that one way system
also severs the railway station and the bus station from the main town centre itself.
>>So we’re trying to encourage businesses to come in but unfortunately lots of businesses are saying
that they can’t attract the staff because of the difficulty in actually accessing the town centre.
>>We need the regeneration for Redhill and the improvement to transport links
which will certainly help attract those national retailers and jobs to the town.
>>The Redhill Balanced Network will make a huge amount of difference because it will unlock the potential within the town centre.
It will make it far easier for people to walk into the town centre, better cycling routes,
ease congestion coming through the town centre and make it much more attractive to businesses to come in.
