Japan Expo Paris -July 2010
Again this year 2010, many fans were here for the biggest european manga event...
Numbers of passionates have discovered a new story...
A hommage story...
- This is fantastic, we recognize Akira Toriyama's spirit, and that's amazing.
Eric Legrand : that's Vegeta's official voice in the French anime. we invited him in our DB Multiverse stand.
Brigitte Lecordier, French voice of chibi Goku, Gohan and Goten.
-Gogeta jr, what motivated you to participate to DB Multiverse?
-I knew Salagir who's the administrator of supafan.net and lunionsacre.net. And I knew his website where he published his comics and other works.
And I knew that he was a good scenarist. He's asked me on many projects, one on DBZ.
And as I master this style, I told him "Why not give it a shot"
-Why did you decide not to continue your fan-manga, "L'aventure continue", where you were the only scenarist?
-For "Dragon Ball l'aventure continue", I had the beginning and the end of the scenario, but between on I missed some details, and I was in doubt...
And as Salagir masters well the scenarios, I decided to give up my personal project.
-Let's talk about the evolution of your drawing method...
-I drew on paper, with basic materials: pencil, eraser, mechanical pencil and inc for pens with fine point.
Then I scanned the sheet and edited it with Photoshop.
-Photoshop, did you learn that at school or by yourself?
-By myself, with online tutorials.
But now I draw on graphic table directly on my PC. That's easier and faster.
Well, you need some time to adapt though...
-You started on graphic table during a fight between Cell Dabra, didn't you?
-I did, pretty much.
-In an interview in the Shonen Jump magazine, Toriyama considers that only the quill
can gives impulse and style to a drawing. What do you think about that?
-You must know there is a difference between the paper and computer inking...
- For you, we haven't really seen the difference...
-Really? I have... first, I can put more details because I can zoom into the page...
That's an advantage.
-So now, you don't regret your old method?
-sometimes I do... It's been a while since I haven't drawn on paper like that, in the Japan Expo...
I could enjoy it for a bit.
-What do you bring in the scenario?
-I gave my opinion at some points... Sometimes Salagir is stuck on a scene and ask me to help him out.
He has also added some of my ideas such as bringing Raditz in who was not planned at first.
I had drawn him on a draft, Salagir said it was a good idea.
Besides, I have a certain liberty for the pagemaking...
-So in fact, at first the only saiyans were supposed to be Vegeta, Nappa and the bad Kakarotto...?
-Indeed. They should've been only three.
-And so, for the layout?
And for the layout, I have some liberty for fight choregraphies, hm...
-He gives you the general idea...?
-Yes he does and from that I am free to put it the way I want.
-Do you still run into issues?
-I haven't gotten any real difficulties, but it's especially elements that take time to make
such as decors, frameworks, speedlines and some effects...
-As well as the bleachers?
-Yes... fortunately Stef84 is here to help me finishing the pages quicker so I can move on faster.
-Is there still anything that Toriyama knows that you still have to learn or perfect?
Yes, for instance the vehicles, future devices and robots...
because you have to put a lot of details and stay credible... this isn't an easy thing to do.
-A word about the special chapters?
I haven't read them all yet. But for those that are on the website, the two on Broly drawn by Alberto Cubatas are very good.
But I am disappointed by the one about Gothax... That's it.
-Why do you go to the Japan Expos?
I can see the entire team for real, different from the internet.. And I can meet the readers
And for the satisfaction to see the books in real shape, printed and sold out.
-Is Dragon Ball really your favorite manga?
Dragon Ball... Is it, but I wouldn't go through all of it. I've known it since I was a kid even though I only have a couple of tomes and some VHS...
-You don't have the entire Dragon Ball's manga collection?
Let's say Dragon Ball, I saw it on TV so I already knew it.
But for knowing other mangas I had to buy the books.
-You know Dragon Ball thanks to the Club Dorothee? (French TV anime show during the 90s)
Yes, like everyone else does I think.
-So, you're a manga fan or has only Dragon Ball ever gotten you interested?
I am a general manga fan, but Dragon Ball is still the best.
-What do you do during your free time?
Play video game, eat and sleep.
-Hm... That's original! You don't do sport and reading?
-huh...
Thanks to the readers all around the world.
-Tell us more about the evolution of your drawing method, from the begining until today...
-At the beginning I was drawing on paper...
-Tell us more about the evolution of your drawing method, of...
-Tell us more about the evolution...
-Gogeta Jr, do you participate to the elaboration of the scenario? and if so, how?
...
-What are the main difficulties that you still run into?
-Huh...
