Hi everyone. Today I' am gonna talk a little bit about tatting.
Tatting is a very simple lace making craft where Double Stich ( DS ) is used. By tying the Double Stitch you can create either rings
or chains.
If you combine both of them you can make simple projects
more difficult
or complicated ones.
What do you need for tatting? You will need a mercerised crochet cotton thread. For beginners number 10 or smaller, as it is thicker, and with more practice number 20 can be used. The higher the number the thinner the thread is.
I do not recommend knitting yarns as they tear very easily and tatting involves a lots of thread pulling.
Then you need some shuttles. They are usually made of plastic.
There are 3 types of shuttles. The first type has both sides the same. In that case, you will need a crochet hook or yarn darner for pulling the thread through picot to make picot joins.
When you use yarn darner I would recommend to use blunt tip as sharp one might damage thread and hurt you.
Second type has curved point on one side which is used for making picot joins.
Third one has small crochet hook instead of curved point.
This is an example of the shuttle with thread wound around the center.
The thread can move easily from side to side and you can hear clicking sound.
Clik-click :)
If you do not have any shuttle you can make your own from either plastic or cardboard in shape as you can see. On top of shuttle is a little bit of horizontal plastic to prevent thread from unwinding.
For jewelry making you can also use beads or buttons.
If you use beads you need to use paper clips for saving space for making joins. I will show you later in other videos how to tat with beads.
It is very handy to have dental floss for hiding thread ends which is easier than to use needle, at least for me. It is handy for stringing beads as well.
And of course you need small very sharp pointy scissors.
It is all from me for now and I will see you next time :)
