When going on a missionary trip, there are three really important things to think
about when you are considering your clothing.
The first is to consider the right kind of clothing for the type of work you're
going to be doing when you're there.
So, for example, if you are going to be doing a lot of painting
or if you're going to do a lot of construction work, you want to make sure that
you bring clothes that you don't mind uh... getting torn up and maybe not even
coming back with you.
You'll also want to think about the right amount.
If you kind of envision the perfect suitcase for a missionary trip, it's
probably going to look a lot different than your vacation trip, or your recreational
kinds of trips. For example, when we go on vacation we tend to pack
a lot of clothes for recreational activities, sometimes
multiple outfits for each day and when you're going on a missionary trip you
probably are not gonna pack that way.
One thing that we used to tell the young people when would take youth
mission trips
is to say "You know what, where we're going, a lot of people wear
there their same outfits multiple times before they get to wash them and
you can do that too.
And so if you think about taking the right amount, you should have your
work clothes, you can also take recreational clothes if you're going to have
recreational time but maybe just less of it. And think about all the space, all the room
in your suitcase that you can be saving up if you take
half as many outfits and just wear them each twice.
That can be space that you could take something else that would be helpful for the trip,
something helpful for the effort that you're going down there
to complete and to provide.
The other thing, and really really important, probaly the most important
is to think about the culture,
where it is that you'll be going and visiting.
You want to make sure that you consider the type of culture and the
type of clothes that are considered appropriate when you're going. The last thing you want to
do is show up somewhere and say, "Hey we're here to help," but be dressed in a way
that's offensive to
that particular culture.
So I hope these three tips about the clothing you should pack when on a
missionary trip
help you prepare for your trip.
