The performance of aerospace is fundamentally determined by electronics, hardware components
and software. The DLR work therefore is concentrating in has a strong emphasis on the requirements
of the IT infrastructure.
The previous system was no longer able to meet the demanding requirements and stability
and availability. The existing solution was based on a hierarchical storage management
approach. That approach was after a short time of productive work unstable and showed
to be not appropriate for a failsafe environment. We therefore needed to adapt our infrastructure
and applications to accommodate a new storage system which was able to meet the requirements
of aerospace in terms of availability and 24/7 support.
We therefore needed a new solution for the storage system which accommodates existing
applications and infrastructure and to provide a failsafe operation 24/7 each day of the year.
Importantly the funding for this new storage system had to come from ESA the European
space agency so we had to make a compelling case to convince them to invest in a new storage
system. It was a hard and difficult task for us.
The project by itself was a very long process, an unusual long process, because we had discussions
over 2 years to find out the best solutions together with the customer. We had changing
requirements during that time we had changing budget issues during that time. One of the
biggest issues during the project was that because of the space character of the project
we had to cover documentation requirements which are much longer much more in detail
than is normal in a commercial account. This was once of the aspects we had to cover during
the implementation of the project and in the process of defining the
steps for the project by itself.
Together with our partner Hitachi Data Systems we build up a solution, a proven solution
which fits up to the special requirements of the space business. One of these requirements
is that the equipment must be a very long time in the data centre and changes to the
equipment is highly complicated so we had to cover all the aspects of future based proven
solutions which we had to build together.
