Hello, and welcome to the All Day show with Steven Gomez.
I'm your new host, Steven Gomez.
Now it's never easy to talk about tragedy,
But just recently, as you may or may not know,
a young man was shot on the premise of appearing suspicious,
wearing a hoodie and holding a dangerous bag of Skittles.
This young man was Trayvon Martin, and he was shot
by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.
Now we've decided to discuss the possession of this weapon
with our licensed sucrose disaccharide expert
to see what he has to say about the legitimacy
of the murderer's action.
Hello Mr. William Wonkerstein. Where are you right now?
I am currently in my home lab running experiments.
Interesting. Are... Are those... Skittles?
Oh... Nope. No Skittles here.
So, just what are the potential dangers of Skittles?
Well, you see, on a danger scale of 1-10,
Skittles are indeed an 11, which is unheard of.
Tasting the rainbow actually has severe repercussions on this neighborhood,
Which very well may correlate to suspicious activity.
So it's clear that Zimmerman should feel threatened by Martin, then,
as those Skittles could've endangered the entire community.
Right. That's exactly what I'm saying. What a danger it is nowadays
that children can access candy so easily.
But, if you think about it, we have no one to blame but ourselves.
On Halloween, we just hand them these packaged terrors on a massive scale.
That's very true. Now lets keep in mind that the major point
on Zimmerman's defense was that Martin was looking very suspicious
wearing this hoodie. Thank you for your... are those... Skit-...
Mr... Nevermind. Thank you for your time.
For more on this tragedy, we had our rookie correspondent Jason Cha
interview one of Martin's best friends to see what he has to say
about the root of this issue.
So how long have you known Trayvon?
Me and T... We go way back man... We went to the same kindergarten together.
Okay, so based on how long you've known him, how would you describe him?
Trayvon was always a decent kid... He was never violent, never threatening,
but he was a teenager, so he did make a few mistakes, like all of us.
Like wearing a hoodie?
What does that have to do with anything?
Take a look at this.
But I am urging the parents of black and latino youngsters particularly
to not let their children go out wearing hoodies.
I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin's death
as George Zimmerman was.
Take that hood off. People look at you and what do they think?
What's the instant identification? What's the instant association?
It's those crime scene surveillance tapes.
Everytime you see someone sticking up a 7-Eleven, the kid's wearing a hoodie.
So the fact that Trayvon wore a hoodie was cause enough.
I mean, if Geraldo said it, i'm sure its true right?
I completely disagree. I feel that racial profiling and
abuse of powers were greater factors in Zimmerman's decision
than just a simple hood. I feel that Zimmerman assumed
that just because Trayvon was an African-American and
wearing a hoodie that he was up to no good.
In addition, he used his status as watch captain
to stalk Trayvon and get into a closer proximity to him
despite the police specifically telling him not to.
Hmm... Nope, it was the hoodie. Thanks for the interview.
I think we've come to the same conclusion.
What the hammer? That's not even the same conclusion.
Welcome back Jason. So why are you out there?
Uhm... You sent me here...
That would be true... Why did we send him out there?
Oh... That's right. We wanted to see how people's opinons
of you would change based on how we arranged your wardrobe as such.
Oh the hoodie? I was supposed to put that on?
Cut!
Oh the hoodie? I was supposed to put that on?
HOLDNONONNNONONONO. Just come back inside Jason. You've done your job.
You have to recognize this whole stylizing yourself as a gangster...
You're gonna be a gangster wannabe? Well, people are going to
perceive you as a menace. That's what happens.
Hoodies. They can make anyone look dangerous.
Take a look at this baby... Cute, soft, cuddly...
Think again... Dangerous.
You guys know this guy right? How photogenic, kind, handsome...
Think again... Dangerous.
On a different point, we have novice Jason Cha again interviewing
Zimmerman's Court Attorney.
So how could you go about defending Zimmerman,
even though most people believe he is guilty?
Well, by the Florida Stand Your Ground law, Zimmerman's actions were justified.
It states that if you feel endangered in public by a threat,
you have the right to use force against that threat.
Now, before, people could only use force if there was no clear
opportunity to retreat. If there was an opportunity to retreat,
you had to take it. But now, people can use force even if
the opportunity to retreat is clear.
So we can get away pretty much anything in Florida,
as long as we state that it was in self defense?
Yep.
That's awesome... Let's try it out.
Hi, Mister!
It was in self defense!
Nononono! Don't worry, it was in self defense!
